Before you do any of this make sure you are familiar with the task manager controls, what the various process do and how to use msconfig.

If you are not read up and make sure you know what you are doing as you can really mess up your PC when your in the msconfig. How ever that said.... One good thing I have found to speed up my win 7 machine is to reduce the background processes, by disable/stopping some of the back ground windows programs and services. If you go through the various processes running in task manager, and look for things you dont need running on a home machine and use msconfig to stop loading things like the smart card handling and fax etc at boot up. I'll say it again, be very careful using msconfig, if your not sure...

Another less potentially dangerous way to improve things is to just stop processes and services via the task manager. The downside of this is you have to do it each time you start the machine, and is a good way to learn what does what before messing with the msconfig. That said just stopping processes wont mess up your configuration and the worst that can happen is you'll just crash it and have to reboot, and it will restart.

I'll use as an example, 'Superfetch' which speeds up program loading by having parts already running, which is all well and good but can eat a fair chunk of your system and slow things down...

So you go into the Task Manager, and underprocesses, find which of the svchost's taking up the most memory, right click it and at the bottom of the drop down menu you will see 'go to services' click that and then in the highlighted ones find superfetch and then right click that and stop.

Another one worth stopping if it is running is the windows media player network sharing program if you dont share music/films over a home network.

Stay away from anything to do with your anti virus.security.

hope this helps
