Few questions regarding recommended system temps

Hey Guys,

Thanks for reading my thread and also for commenting on my question. I am a long time follower of Toms Hardware, but this is the first time I've had to ask a question, so my apologies if this information was else where.

I've been building PCs for quite some time (since my 486 in middle school), but with this latest build I am constantly suffering from higher than normal temperatures which I believe is contributing to some random shut downs the system is experiencing.

Here is the primary issue:

- While I am playing a game (with high spec) such as Battlefield 4 or Assassins Creed Black Flag, the system will run perfectly fine.. high FPS .. 70+, no lag, no chugging, no issues what so ever. About 90 minutes in, the system will completely shut down.. no warning.. just black screen.

- When I press the power button again, nothing happens.. than after about 10 minutes the system automatically starts up again.

= I assume this is because the powersupply is not being cooled properly, or perhaps there is a fan issue, and the system shuts itself down because of the high heat? The reason I say this is because I've touched the powersupply after it shut down and its extremely hot.. can't even touch it for more than a second without fear of burning my finger. Though that is purely my thinking, and I would definitely love some opinions on what it could be.

Here are my system specs:
Intel i7 950 running standard speed with CoolerMaster V8 fan cooler
12GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 Ram
1x EVGA Geforce 470 GTX
Zalman ZM1000-HP 1000W Power supply
CoolerMaster HAF-X Case

Normal Load:
GPU: 30C
CPU: 35C

High Load:
GPU: 90C
CPU: 80 - 85C = This seems much higher than normal.

Questions:

1. Could the random shut downs be contributed to the heat issue from other components such as the Video Card or CPU.. or could it because of a faulty power supply that is unable to vent all of the heat?

2. I purchased today a Corsair H110 Water cooling system for the CPU, I'm hoping this will help out with temps.. Is there a recommended CPU and GPU temp for the specs I listed?

Any help would be most appertained.

Thank you,
Ryan

Hot to the touch isn't a valid measure, metal that is 40C will seem quite hot to the touch, but it isn't hot as far as your computer is concerned.

Your load temps on both CPU and GPU seem high, CPUs should be kept below 70C, preferably below 60C, GPUs are made with a different technique and can run at 90-100C, but you should do something to try to bring it down to reasonable levels, the 470 shouldn't be putting out that much heat.

Use HW monitor and see how hot it says everything is getting, if the ambient temperature in your case is rising a lot it is time to clean those fan filters or get more fans, the motherboard and hard drive temperatures give you an idea of if the ambient temp in the case is rising significantly, they are...

Nvidia GPU's like yours when they go above 95c, I believe they shut down automatically. And 80c isn't bad for GPU's or CPU's, its only when it goes above 90c

The corsair cooler your buying should bring down the temps about 20cish but I can't be sure.

Thanks all for the help!

I'm going to be installing the Corsair 110 CPU cooling system today and see how that affects temps and performance. I was unaware of the Nvidia GPU having that 95c limit for auto shutdown.. makes me thing maybe its not the power supply after all.

Though I will look more into it.

Thanks!
