Hello I'm looking to step off the console ladder and on to the pc ladder, and I want something that will a: out perform next gen b: last a long time.
I know a computer builder and he's got a deal where you get;

Intel i3 2100 3.10 ghz
4gb of ddr 3
1tb hard drive

Windows 8 64-bit
PCI-Ex 1Gb Zotac Geforce 210 Dual-Link

Monitor 23" full hd 3d acer monitor with glasses
Comes with office 2010 and a load more software.
He claims it will be perfect for top end gamers
All for £400

That's a low end machine, the i3 is a decent CPU but dual cores are getting increasingly outdated

8GB of DDR3 is the optimum for modern games

The Geforce 210 was an entry level card back in a day, modern integrated graphics are better than the 210, even the integrated graphics on the i3 perform close to it

This list doesn't include monitor/windows but this is much better for gaming

that will not out perform next gen plus the video card will lag very bad seeing as its very old and doesn't have much power to start with
the cpu is technically dual core but hyper threading help its a little more
4gbs or ram is minimum
you need at least an i5 minimum on intel to out perform next gen consoles

Tried my best to condense it to around 400, the 90 pound drop in budget is a pretty big performance downgrade

rolandzhang3 build seems about as good as you can get for that price.

You could also try this for a faster cpu but less storage space and no optical drive(I find them obsolete)

Depends who you ask. Maybe you have some friends that know how to put a PC together ? And if you are feeling confident you can just look up a tutorial on youtube its not very hard, all in all it takes about 2 hours to put a pc together if everything goes well.

"If everything goes well." being the key words hehe :D

Getting some techie friends to help you would be a great idea, though :p

You'd have almost no warranty and a likely chance of being ripped off on Ebay, might as well let a store build it for you, they usually shouldn't charge more than 50 or so (depends on store though)

If you don't know much about getting a PC and don't have any friends who know how/not confident to build it yourself. I'd ask a local store as roland suggested or look at a custom pc retailer online. I'd recommend checking out somewhere like Vibox. They have a good ebay account and were my first custom PC, of course more expensive than buying parts yourself but bear in mind these are built, with warranty and often come with windows. This is what you can find for £400 built WITH windows http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vibox-Dynamo-AMD-Quad-Core-HD7750-Windows-8-Gaming-PC-8GB-1TB-Fast-Computer-/360643326218? and bear in mind Windows costs around £80 so you'll have to add that onto the price of any PC you build(generally). Overall it's best to build a PC yourself if you know how as you'll get a much better performance for your £££ but it's possible to get custom pcs if you can't make yourself but you'll get worse performance.
