My friend just got battlefield 4 and he is having problems running it. He says that all he sees is a white screen and the minimap. I'm tryingto help him solve the issue but i don't know where to start. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The only thing I know for sure is that he has a Dell that he bought recently, and it has an i3. No dedicated GPU, only integrated. And he was trying to use his Dual shock 3.

If he has an i3 with integrated graphics and he was trying to run BF4 then your friend is trying to do the impossible. BF4 is a really CPU and GPU intensive game, there is no way that it will function properly with Intel HD Graphics. This must be the reason he was experiencing the white screens. If your friend wants to play BF4 without the white screens tell him to install a dedicated GPU.
Here is a good one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/VTX3D-Radeon-7870-Tahiti-Graphics/dp/B00AM3A7JY/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1385207085&sr=8-6&keywords=7870 or if he is on a tight budget: http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-Radeon-6670-GDDR3-Graphics/dp/B00BJ2NOXS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1385207112&sr=8-3&keywords=6670
The 7870 Tahiti will run BF4 on Medium/High Settings and the 6670 will run it on low(but there is a possibility it will creep up to medium settings - but i doubt it)

I ran the Beta on my i5/integrated as a test and got 30+fps on medium 720p. I also ran Planet side 2 on my laptop before I built a PC, it had an i7/integrated, it ran it at about 10fps which is unplayable and I will not argue otherwise but it did still run. If the integrated graphics was the issue he wouldn't get a white screen, he would get a slide show.

He is planning a PC upgrade soon though.

Edit: unless of course bf4 has an anti-low end PC blocker of some sort which I would assume would have an error message at least.

The integrated graphics will still not run BF4 properly, the inbuilt graphics on the intel cpu's vary on generation and model.

Turns out he didnt just get a white screen with a minimap, he was failing to render the world which is more of what i would expect from not having the power to run it.

That depends . . . if there is a rendering problem, I would personally diagnose it as a graphics problem. What PSU does he have?

He has a Dell Inspiron 660 so I'd imagine its the cheapest 300w dell could find. When he upgrades I'll make sure he gets a new one.

300W is fine if he is only supporting an i3 with no dediated GPU. I am pretty sure it is a Graphics problem. But if he gets a new graphics card then he will need to get a new psu.
