Hello guys

I am looking for a CPU upgrade

I have an Asus M5A97 EVO r2 mobo
8GB 1.6ghz Corsair Vengeance RAM
I will have a Zalmann CNSP12X cooler
A noname 550W psu ( the cheap one in dabs) i will change it to a 500w proper one later on
At the moment I have a HD 7770 but I am going to change it to GTX 760 for 1080p gaming
I am going to do gaming and Java programming with virtual machines

Which CPU should suit me better?
FX 6300/FX8320?
I know that 8320 is faster, but do I need that 2 plus cores? For gaming I know, that I do not need, but for virtual machines I am not sure. Currently I have an x2 265 that is 100% at a small virtual machine, I am not sure what happens when I get more into Java.

about price: If needed I can pay for 8320, but for no gain/ very small gain, I would not get it.

Solution
You do not NEED to get 8320, if the budget is indeed too tight go for the 6300, but I think that in a couple of years you will be thinking about changing. Well considering games, more and more games starting to use more cores ( like BF4 ) so an 8 core CPU will be give you future advantage. Now about virtual machines 6 cores are fine, even 4 cores are fine I suppose. The main thing about vms is are the RAM which you have plenty I see( for programming on vm ) . Also it depents on how many vms you will be running at the same time. I noticed you said you will be doing programming so compiling is the main task your CPU will be doing , a task that a 6300 is worthy of doing just fine .
To sum up if you have the money go for the 8320. The...

Hi
The way you sett the question :
Depending of what you expect as result ?
f.e. if you aim at 49 - 60 FPS at BF4 you need FX-8350 and GTX Titan
but if you`r OK with 33 - 41 FPS at the same GTX Titan you can have FX-6300

check this - it`s the only one i found so far showing FPS over the same GPU and different CPU`s
http://www.bf4blog.com/battlefield-4-beta-gpu-cpu-benchmarks/

I`ll go for FX-8320 in the options you sett
But i`ll advise you to get i5-46XX - the FX-XXXX reported in some Games FRAME DROPS - you can google arround .....
or look this one ..

Titan???
I am planning to get a 760 or 270X, I am not going to spend £800 on GPU
I would rather get 8320 and OC it to 8350 level
I am quite sure that you do not need Titan for 1080p ultra/high gaming...
I am aiming for 60 fps, but as I saw in real world there is only several FPS at 1080p from fx 6300 to i7 4770k, so I know that for purely gaming fx 6300 would be enough, this question is more about the computer power needed for Virtual machines and compiling

I answered your question thinking that 50% of your time is gaming 50% java programming in VM . If thats the case I recommend 8320 again. If gaming is not that big of a deal then of course go for the 6300.
But (maybe I repeat myself ) 6300 is not gonna last as long as the 8320 for smooth gameplay. A very good GPU like the ones you listed will be fine also and will help in expanding the 6300 ''time'' for games, no need to go for the titan.

I see you read words like f.e. and advise like you HAVE TO DO IT and OBEY THOSE ..... :)

Of course you don`t have to buy GTX Titan to play games but are you gonna hit 60 FPS at 1080p and Ultra Game settings wit the CPU & GPU you have choose is all new question !
Or you just need 20 - 30 FPS and you are FINE with !

That`s all i`m pointing here :)

For Virtual-setup - more core`s are ever better than lower cores
I personally deal allot VM ... MS VDI and Userful VDI is my last month work at work and home :)
SO having i7 or FX-83xx or AMD FX-9370 even will make life easyer :)
The Gaming is allays personal taste and you can deal with 40 FPS or 60 or 120 hwo cares ... you can allays ignore the difference ...

I plan to do go %50 for programming or more, I must play less games :/ Futureproofing seems like a decent way, that is the reason to stay with 8320

@Nikolay

Ohh, I see where there might be a moscommunication
I am going to change my HD 7770 that is only capable 20-30 at 1080p for a gtx 760 or 270x that will provide 60 fps at 1080p
Titan is more geard towards 2k/4k with those ridiculous spec, probably that will be like 120 fps or more at 1080p.

I am looking for a reasonable, not a high end machine, because of my funds so i7 and fx9 series is out of league.
Thank you for your help as well!
