I'm trying to decide which one of these I should opt for, since they are around the same price. My thought is that the fx 6300 will be better in the long run because it has more cores, but will it matter? Also the i3 seems to beat the fx 6300 right now because the single core performance is significantly better, plus I can upgrade to an i5 later. But what do you guys think?

if you can upgrade to an i5 later, then i would go with the i3. However if you can i would just skip ahead to the i5 which is better then the i3, and better then the fx6300.

i3 cpus are real good cpus. seeing intel match amd's 6 core chip with 2 cores and 4threads is pretty awesome. but remember this, for multithreaded tasks a fx 6300 would easily win against an i3. for example, most modern games still dont utilize 4 cores fully but with some games like crysis 3, bf4 multiplayer, far cry 3 ect a fx 6300 easily wins against i3 becoz of more cores. The final choices lies in this, i3 is still good enough for gaming, but you can also upgrade to i5 later which easily beats fx 6300.

Well first almost all modern games utilize at least 4 cores, 2 core cpus are pretty mediocre especially for gaming. The fx-6300 will easily beat the i3 on pretty much anything that is multi thread.

The reason why i suggested OP to get the i3 was for the later ability to switch to an i5 later on without the need to switch motherboards. Honestly OP should buy an i5 now, however depending on how long you will have to wait to upgrade, and whether you are willing to buy a new motherboard, will help decide what cpu to get now. If you are willing to buy a new motherboard later on, then fx-6300 for sure, if you are only going to use the i3 for a short time until you can buy an i5 then get an i3 (however you should really just get an i5 now imo). The fx-6300 will pretty much dominate the i3 in gaming, however single thread performance is lacking. I love my fx-6300, however an i5 would be better. Hope that helps

the fx6300 rules the roost in its price segment plus it can be overclocked. from a budget stand point you cant go wrong with an fx6300. right now i see the fx6300 going for as low as $110 and an amd 7870ghz 2gb going for $110... that combo will vastly outperform the new consoles for a dirt cheap price. find a 2tb hd for like $80, a $40 case, $50 600w power supply, i see 2x4gb 1600cl9 ram going for $40 over at tiger... and a nice $90 mobo plus a $30 hyper 212 cooler and you will have a very 1080p 60fps gaming capable rig from a monster budget price of $550 give or take.
