Can't update a fresh install of XP

Niece has an older laptop so, stuck with XP.

I have WinXP SP2, so got a copy of WinXP with SP3, figured save myself some time... use it instead and couldn't get it to update. Just sat there 'checking for the latest update' for 20min.

Figured bum copy, so used my original disc (which I've had/used for years with 0 issues). Installed WinXP SP2, installed SP3, installed IE8, then the network card driver (ethernet not wifi) and got an error 0x80190194.

Downloaded the FixIt from Microsoft, which found and couldn't fix 'service registration is missing or corrupt'.

Installed microsoft update agent 30, and stuck at 'checking for the latest update' again.

So, formatted the drive, gave the WinXP SP3 another chance... format, install, it already had IE8 and SP3 so no worries there... tried the update and same 'checking for the latest update' again, and no prompt for the ActiveX.

Most systems in my house are now Win7x64, but the the kids still have older laptops running WinXP. I've installed WinXP at least 40x over the years with my legal copy of XP SP2 and never had any issues. Now, can't get it to run no matter what.

I've also tried lowering the internet security levels as per a thread I read, and there was nothing in the 'c:\windows\downloaded program files' folder to delete. Reinstalled 3x using 2 different copies. That Microsoft FixIt is well, useless. Any ideas what it could be?

When I went to run the FixIt, it says it needs Net 2.0, click the link, links says no longer available and takes me to I think it was 3.5.

I don't think 3.5 is needed for SP3, since I've always just installed WinXP SP2 and immediately installed SP3 when done... never needed to install anything beforehand.

Fingers crossed... formatted (4th time now) installed my original WinXP SP2, SP3, IE8, Network Card driver, NET Framework 3.5 is now (VERY slowly) finishing. Tried running the Update Agent 30 installer, but said already installed.

Took forever for NET to download/install... finally gave up and cancelled it, checked the hardware, ran a check disk and everything seems fine so, ran it again... still extremely slow for whatever reason, but finished.

Rebooted, checked the IE ActiveX settings and tried again... no ActiveX prompt coming up, and been 5min checking for updates. I have heard and seen in the past it taking 20min or more to finally do something so, will go make/eat dinner and come back in 40min and see if any progress. Still, never had an ActiveX prompt so assuming it's still a bust.

Well, almost 40min and still just checking for updates... kinda needed this done yesterday for her... anyone else have any suggestions?

Again, I've used this copy for years and at least 40x without any issues. 4 times installing on a computer using 2 copies, I'm guessing it's not a corrupt file during install or something like that.

Link under Programs was for Windows Update, so went to the Microsoft Update page instead, which had me run an install, so was optimistic for a while... but again, not asking for ActiveX and stuck at checking for updates again. :S

Yup SP3 shows, 2 installs I downloaded and installed the standalone copy from Microsoft, the other 2 times I used a WinXP disc with SP3 already included. System always showed SP3 on the system screen.

Thought maybe was a network card driver as well, maybe wasn't connecting properly or something so grabbed the Marvell driver from their site not the Toshiba site, no difference, so installed the WiFi card driver and tried that way and still no change.

The Fix-It for windows updates found the 'service registration is missing or corrupt' twice, and twice I got 3 errors

- Service registration is missing or corrupt
- Windows update error 0x8007000D (2013-11-23-T-07_09_49P)
- Cryptographic service components are not registered

Tried the microsoft solutions for each with no luck at all.

I have a license for Vista, was hoping to avoid it because I don't like Vista and requires more resources than XP would on an older system, but, Win7 would definitely not run well on the system so not much choice.

Installed Vista... still stuff is a bit slow, unpacking, installing, downloading... older system but seems much slower than it should be. Gives off a lot of heat though (Toshiba Tecra M3) so wondering if the heat may be causing some slowdown... but... the updates are working on it, on 102 of 112 updates right now. Download is done, install again is going slow.

NEVER had this much trouble with installation of XP. I know it's old and not supported but, I've installed it the exact same way as I always have so, no idea why now it's giving me grief about service registration, cryptographic problems, and IE not popping up the activex... should just work.

At least I know the laptop 'can' update... and I've been downloading the files with it so internet is fine... if I can find a sure-fire fix I'd love to switch back to XP.

I don't know what my niece does, but she kills computers.

2nd time this happened, before with a DELL, now with this Toshiba... finally got it working/updating with VISTA installed. Ran a full dskchk as well and installed all the other software she needed. Hand it to her... 10min later she comes back, says got some sorta 'insert disk' error. I turn it on... VERY slow... insanely slow... finally gets to the desktop when I realize, I hear no fans running.

... sigh. I think she's the kinda person who should get an etch-a-sketch and save me some grief.

I think it's just bad luck, last laptop I gave it to her and within a day the thing wouldn't start... not a Dell, actually was one of those HP NC600, with the MAXIM 1987 chip that gets micro-fractures and dies. Tried re-soldering but only worked about 2 weeks and died again.

This time, fine was clogged. Lucky for me I lost my patience with it, gave it a good knock in just the right spot. Downside, the fan kicked in full speed, blasted out a wad of dust and crap that literally went directly into my mouth and to the back of my throat, so... laptop is now working it seems, luckily I didn't drop it while choking. :D
