My CPU seems to be running at max temperature, help?

Lately I've noticed my computer is not running at its usual speed. I just found my problem being that my CPU is getting way overheated. I am using a AMD Phenom II x6 processor along with a water cooling kit, which has always been working well but recently started overheating. Take a look at this picture to get a better look of what I'm talking about:

I am thinking that I would possibly need new thermal paste or maybe even a new cooler but am unsure of what to troubleshoot first.

Thank you!

I saw in another thread something like this "I have the same problem with phenom II X6 1090t the speed should be 3.2 GHz but it only give me 1.4 GHz"

Is that what you're talking about? If yes, how could I put my CPU back to its normal state :S

Thanks :)

If you notice all the temps are at 255 which would instantly kill your CPU, and is likely the highest that software can monitor. Have you changed any setting in the BIOS? If not, use coretemp, speedfan, and the BIOS to check your temps, because those are obviously wrong.

I've tried multiple programs including Speedfan, and yes the temperate read by the software would be unreal. Speedfan gives the same readings as HWMonitor as well.

I've restarted my PC at this point and everything is normal. It's very weird because I would turn on my PC lets say in the morning... It would be at an extremely high temp. I would simply restart the machine and everything would be normal.

***Note*** - I reinstalled windows 2 days ago, so my machine is 100% virus free and this issue was happening even before the reinstall.

I mean, but not only that, if I boot up bf3 when the temperature is high, its unplayable because the CPU is getting maxed out to 100%. But like I said, a simple restart fixes the entire problem.

And yes I know, bf3 is CPU intensive but I've never had a problem like this in the past and the CPU is way capable of running the game.

Good point. What could be the problem, besides I don't believe the CPU is actually overheating. Could it simply be on its way out? :S

Thanks.

I think I found a solution to my own problem after looking and taking some suggestions. Looking back, the problem has been happening after I got my GTX770. For that I needed to update my BIOS. I saw on the AMD website this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEMqrgPdiCY&list=PL6CFEA6C71BB14979&index=3

Those are all some of my symptoms and it seems that my processor was not happy with the current version of my BIOS. Sounds crazy but yet true.
