I had to send back 2x 1g memory to crucial because they were twice the heigth of the existing sticks and the clamps on the side could not come up around the corners. I tried repeatedly but no installation. The two 1gs work fine that came with the dell optiplex gx620. What gives with the different heights?

Did you use Crucial's Memory Advisor Tool? If only low profile RAM fits this should have been identified and you shouldn't have been sent incompatible RAM. Crucial guarantee's system compatibility when you use their advisor.

In either case if you bought the correct type of RAM for your computer then it should have fit no matter if it was low profile or full profile, and by the looks of the images I've found they are fairly standard clips.
What can have an impact with Dell systems is they have a tight fit when you put the computer back together. Something above the RAM gets in the way and therefore only low profile is recommended. But if you say the clips don't meet are you sure the RAM was seating correctly if you had the correct type...

All the pictures I have seen of the Dell GX620 show that full profile RAM sticks shouldn't be an issue when the motherboard is exposed. The heatsink holders are very tall from the looks of it, much taller than a full sized RAM stick but I cant determine from the pictures that I've found what lies above the RAM sticks. I've as of yet never come across RAM clips that can't take both low profile and full profile sticks. But this is Dell and anything is possible.
