Is It Better To Xfire Or Upgrade? Which Is More Cost Effective?

I'm currently putting together a budget build (here), built around the concept of getting the best performance for the money.

But one huge obstacle is figuring out whether I need to buy a PSU with enough output for Xfire, or whether it would be more cost effective to just upgrade in ~3 years when my build becomes out of date. Anyone have an opinions? Should I plan on Xfire in the future, who just build cheap and plan to upgrade?

Solution
depends on when you're planning to upgrade/crossfire. If you think you'll only need to upgrade your graphics performance in 3 years, then don't worry about crossfire because buying a 3 year old video card is never a good idea.

I just upgraded from SLI to a single card and I probably will go single card when I upgrade in a few years.

I didn't realize how much my SLI setup "needed" high frame rates to feel smooth.

My single 780 feels smoother 50fps playing crysis 3 maxed out, then my 560's in SLI felt with the same frame rates on "high".

Basically, if the SLI couldn't keep the game pegged at 60FPS, I could feel every drop below that mark.

I have looked up in intense fire-fights that feel really smooth and been surprised that my single card was in the low 40's. (because it was still playing smoothly)

My SLI setup was almost unplayable at that frame rate. (because it would swing abruptly)

Thanks, this is great information. I'm just looking for a budget build, so it seems the hassle and the cost of Xfire just doesn't seem worth it (plus, like others have noted, it could be difficult and expensive to buy a way out of date GPU).

Thanks to all for their responses, you were a huge help.
