Can I use a drive from a generic ASUS CM1630 for a new build?

So I want to create a new computer without having to rebuy an operating system, and my current computer is an ASUS Essentio CM1630 with a 680 Gb SATA drive, and I want to simply use my old drive. I've had comments from a software engineer that he's tried with a different drive, and for some reason it was not compatible with the second computer. He said that it connected fine, but it needed some special thing to run. The other option for me (without buying a new drive), is cloning the drive, but he says that ASUS might have put in such a cheap drive, that it won't allow me to clone it. If you have experience or know if it would work or not, please let me know.

Here is ASUS's generic spec list:

Solution
1. Reusing an old drive with the original OS in situ is rarely a good idea.

2. Depending on what OS, and what version of that OS, it may not work.

3. Depending on the specific licensing, OEM or retail, it may well deactivate itself. You have 30 days to fix this.

4. If, after all of the above it by some miracle does work, now you're left with unusable hardware.

5. A typical Windows OS is maybe 10% the cost of a 'new computer'. Either pony up the cost of a Windows OS in your budget, or go to a legally free alternative. Linux, perhaps.
