Ok so im in the market for a new graphics card upgrading my old 7770, and im looking at the new 280x and was wondering witch one was the best. Games i play are bf4, planetside 2 and Arma 3 (i play more but thoes are the most demanding). So im willing to spend money on a sapphire toxic if its worth it, i mean does it really give more fps than the other 280x cards? Also does it run hot, is it loud, etc. Whether it is worth it or not, i would like you to tell me witch one you think is the best down below and why. Thanks.

Solution

Well the ASUS outperforms the 770 by about 8 or so fps and it $40 cheaper. The MSI gaming...

My friend has the asus DirectCUII and it is soooo silent so i was considering that one...Ok so i guess the toxic is not the best choice, i will go with the asus direct or msi gaming i guess

So now im deciding between the asus version and the msi version, witch of these two (performance wise) would be better? Noise doesn't bother me a hole lot so if lets say the msi one outperforms the asus version, but has slightly more noise i wont mind.

Sapphiere Radeon R280x does not have a sticker on the screw like MSI Radeon R280X has it. Get Sapphiere Radeon R280X and IC Diamond 7 carat thermal compound. You will be glad that you did. Card because much cooler when IC Diamond 7 carat reapplied.
I void the warranty to show you the effect of IC DIamond 7 carat thermal on the Tahiti GPU. The effect is outstanding!

people always say the toxic is the best but.. if your willing to spend $350 on a 280x why not just get a 780?. imo the ASUS, Sapphire or MSI R9 280x are the best R9 280X you can get. I myself am getting the ASUS R9 280x because of its clock, 4 heatpipes and DCU II. Though the MSI R9 280x should be just as good in cooling and can easily be overclocked to the ASUS's clock.

The Toxic has been known to see artifacts and such because of its high clock but I can't vouch for this, just several consumer reviews.

Don't void the warranty on your card neither just to get around 10C less when under load. The ASUS DCU II R9 280x does well under load imo and its not worth breaking the warranty just to lower the temperature. You never know when the GPU breaks down on ya and you can't RMA it because the warranty is void

As again you don`t see the whole picture. Sapphiere cards dont not have stickers on the screws like I said in video tutorial. If video card works, there is no need to the warranty anyways! I used around 25 video cards under heavy overclocks since 2000 and none of them needed a warranty. GPU does not break - it is not mechanical part.Electrical parts dies from over voltage(that`s generates a lot of heat) or from heat. Make sure to use anti-static mat and wrist strap. Plus, he can also apply IC Thermal compound after 2 years when warranty is gone. Reapplying thermal compound is a must thing to do, especially when you are planing overclocking to squeeze 4-5 extra fps and don`t bring your fan speed above 60% and still have bellow 90c on GPU under maximum load.

If you are not a beginner clocker then do not listen to NEVER DONE IT BEFORE people theories. Those who never clocks and saying some myth about fail components. I clocked CPU and GPU since 2000. I never experience bad CPU or GPU. I tested my CPU and GPU under 1-2 years of maximum air overclock and their speed was just the same as I overclocked them at the first day.

Conclusion: For Radeon R280X - get Sapphiere card for 299 bucks and IC DIamond for 6 dollars at Outlet PC. Reapply IC Diamond thermal compound and clock it to the max stable. Enjoy quiet and cool card with extra 5 fps boost. If you are not comfortable with DIY then spend more cash and get faster card, but make sure card comes with at least two fans.
Under maximum load with 2 hour of gameplay MSI Radeon R280X Twin Frozr with stock thermal compound get above 90c with 60% of fan speed. Anything above 60% fan speed is considered LOUD for me. This is results from Cooler Master HAF 932 case with perfect air flow.

Well don't know for sure but im like 85% on the 280x, the only other card im looking at is the 770 but its more $ and has less ram so will probable still go with the 280x, but what i meant when i said still deciding was i don't know witch brand yet. Ive nerrowed it down to the asus DirectCUII and the msi gaming.
Im like 70% toward the asus one because i see alot of people all over the web saying the asus version is better and i like asus sooo yeah.

Well the ASUS outperforms the 770 by about 8 or so fps and it $40 cheaper. The MSI gaming can easily be overclocked to the ASUS's clock. The MSI also has 4 heatpipes with slightly bigger fans, so the MSI has a slight edge on cooling. The 770 is 256 bit while the R9 280x is 384 bit which means the R9 280x transfers 384 bits on the PCI-E 3.0 transfer rate while the 770 transfers 256 on the same transfer rate. The R9 280x also comes with 3GB of VRAM while the 770 is 2GB.

You'd be pretty stupid to get a 770 when the R9 280x has so much more to offer for $40 less. I myself am getting the ASUS R9 280x but is considering the MSI gaming because of the better cooling.

Yeah i guess, i do like the fact that the 770 comes with 3 games however but i dont really play the games it comes with. I will pick up a 280x then, and i think it will be the asus or msi and now considering the sapphire dual-x just because it comes with bf4 so i will have another copy i could sell to my friend.

Yeah but the Sapphire Dual - X clock is 900Mhz while the Asus is 1070 and the MSI is 1000... pretty big differences there mate. Not sure you'd wanna risk that just. Plus it looks like it has 2 small heatpipes and 3 big heatpipes while both Asus and MSI have 6 big heat pipes. So im guessing it doesn't have the greatest cooling I could be wrong though this was just me taking a good look at all three cards. Im not sure, wouldn't want to risk all that just for an extra copy for a game I already have.

oh btw thanks for picking me as best answer :D getting closer to my expert badge

Sapphiere Radeon R9 280x is not 900 mhz. It is 1050Mhz with turbo. 900 mhz without turbo. I am having for clients build 3x Radeon R9 280x: 1x Asus, 1x MSI and 1x Sapphiere. Sapphiere has the highest overclocking frequencies that is stable. In my first built I applied IC Diamond 7 carat to MSI Radeon R9 280x, but if you will do this to Sapphiere R9 280x card - it will become the fastest R9 280x and cool as well.

GO with Sapphiere R9 280x and do not forget to reapply IC Diamond 7 carat thermal compound to lower your temperature on gpu dramatically! This card does not have a warranty void sticker on the screws, so you can reapply thermal compound. Sapphiere card has the highest stable overclocking potential - at least during my test of MSI, Asus and Sapphiere.
I am the guy who has three cards at my testing right now. i am creating a tutorials on each of them.

Stop listen to those that have no clue about the topic. I tested each card very well and reapplied thermal compound to each of those R9 280x. Sapphiere is the best value. Go with 299 bucks one - I have this one and i overclocked it to 1180 mhz stable! MSI r9 280x twin frozr can`t pass above 1130 mhz stable. Asus is under the heavy tests right now but does not seems to be as fast as Sapphiere R9 280x. Sapphiere packaging is ugliest but best performance!
