i currently have an old phenom ii x4 840 paired with a slightly new evga gtx 660 sc and i notice some bottlenecks while gaming and it iritates me. so i decided to upgrade my processor but i don't know which one to buy.

my choices are fx 6300 with gigabyte 970 mobo and an i5 4430 with msi b85m mobo.

can you guys help me to decide which one to buy? i don't have other options beside the two because i'm planning to buy new 24" monitor and ram next month so i'm quite in a budget.

(i'm currently playing at 1366x768 resolution if that helps. but as i said, i'll buy a new monitor with 1080p resolution after the procie and mobo upgrade.)

my other specs:
2x2gb ddr3 1333
antec vp 550p psu

thanks in advance.

OK.
Hope your question's been answered.

As for the RAM, I recommend a 2x4GB (not 4x2GB) kit and 1866MHz. G. SKill has some good memory via PCpartspicker, Newegg ..
FX-6300:
I prefer Intel, so if you had the budget I'd strongly recommend investing in an i5-4670K ($225), then do a light overclock to 4.2GHz.

However, if you compare ONLY the i5-4430 and the FX-6300 then that changes things.

Benchmark (will vary by game. some are LESS bottlenecked by the CPU and some may even be more): http://us.hardware.info/reviews/4993/30/intel-core-i3-4330--i5-4440-review-affordable-haswells-benchmarks-hd-7970-hitman-absolution-1920x1080-medium

FX-6300:
- $70 cheaper
- 6-cores (better utilized in the future)
- similar to i5-4430 once overclocked

I'm not sure why you have such a limited choice, but the cost difference should allow a better motherboard OR add some more DDR3 memory.

*If you add another 4GB of memory be careful to either get IDENTICAL or get the same frequency and CAS (i.e. 1333MHz CAS9). If you could just sell it and get a single kit that would be far better (G. Skill 2x4GB 1866MHz CAS9).

**I assume you have Windows 64-bit or you'll have big problems.

regarding the system ram, i'll sell my old ram and buy new ddr3 kit. i'm thinking of corsair vengeance 1600 8gb( 4x2gb)

and on overclocking, i don't know how.(i'm a noob and don't want to mess with the voltage of my cpu.) so i will be running it at stock speed. i can't get a better mobo and procie beside the two because i can't really expand my budget right for a i5 4670k now for the upgrade. so that's my only choice.

yes you can overclock an i5 4430 .I have one built with an asrock fatality H-87 MOTHERBOARD overclocked to 3.6 and temps do not reach 40 at load.Hard to believe but true. Amazing motherboard!!! No voltage change.
