gigabyte gtx670oc + asus gtx670 direct CUII in SLi

Hi guys,
In my system im running a gigabyte gtx670 oc 2gb and was given a asus gtx670 direct CU II 2gb. Is it worth having or just get rid of it? Is it ok having 2 different cards? Will I see any benifit of the 2?

or should I sell them both and get a gtx690 saw them for $750

these are decent cards, keep them both in SLi and they will give you some nice performance. if your PSU can handle them of course.
and yes they fit together, they they will both work on the lower clock card though. just make sure you have enough cooling in on the case.
and you can sell them later and get the best single card you can get at that time.
forget about the gtx X90 cards. aim for single GPU cards when buying one, unless you have one available PCI-e3 slot only.

You can run both cards in SLI. Just make sure both cards are running at the same clock and memory speeds. And don't forget the SLI bridge.

Overclock?
Yes, if it's stable. Or underclock the Gigabyte. Or meet halfway.

BTW, the GTX690 at $750 is a very bad idea even if you didn't have the 670's. You can get two 770's for $330 each which would not only outperform it but the cooling is also distributed better with two cards.

Additionally, I'd never spend $400 or more and have only a 2GB framebuffer (the GTX690 has 2x2GB which is still only 2GB usable as SLI clones memory).

i believe you should, but not sure tbh, anyway do not worry coz the SLi technology will automatically clock down the higher card clock to mach the lower one.

photonboy brough up a nice issue, the overall frame buffer will still be 2GB.

He didn't specify a need for a larger framebuffer. It's still better than spending $750 on a 690 anyway.

Will 1 card be more dominant then the otherie 2nd card will kick in when needed? Because atm in cpu z card 1 core 783mhz memory 3004 card 2 core 324mhz memory 324... will this change

You mean GPU-Z right? Right beside the Bus Interface reading there is a little blue "?"

Click on it and start a render test. Look at the Sensors tab. If the readings of the second card's core and memory clock changes, then there's nothing wrong.

Ok gigabyte reads 980 and 1059 boost asus 915 and 980 boost

That seems a big difference

You can likely ignore the "1.1" data as the entire PCIe bus is version 3. You have no issues here.

As for your GPU frequency question.
The reason your cards scored so differently was because the main card was being used and the 2nd was not. I assume you weren't gaming.

As long as SLI is working then when you game both cards will sit between the BASE and BOOST for themselves. The way SLI works is called "AFR" or "Alternate Frame Rendering" in which the first card creates FRAME#1, then the second card creates FRAME#2 and so on.

I don't know if a small difference in GPU frequency will matter much since the output is buffered anyway with VSYNC ON so if card#2 was faster the outputted frame would still get sent out, buffered and then update the screen on the next refresh.

I don't know if it would even present as judder with VSYNC OFF since the difference is so small.

You'll also never get the frequencies identical since each GPU frequency varies according to TEMPERATURE and other factors between boost and base automatically.

So:
1) Increase the Asus to 980MHz and leave the Gigabyte alone.

2) Put the Gigabyte where it would have less cooling than the Asus thus get hotter (since it's GPU frequency is normally higher it might have a better fan solution but that's not certain).

Probably the above won't matter much though.

So, currently Newegg (or anywhere else) doesn't stock the gigabyte 670 windforce edition (which is what I have). I see that the Asus 670 is $250. Should I get another gigabyte (~$340 on sites I found) or get the Asus one?

Im happy with the odd combo I used precision x software from evga. Clocked the asus to match my gigabyte one and clicked keep synchronized seems to been stable and happy
