Hello everyone.

Im not computer wizard. But I know my general parts and programs.

So please don't flame me or explain to me in great detail the in's and out's of my question :)

Im just wondering if I can upgrade my win7 32bit system to win7 64bit?

++ Purchased BF4 yesterday and cannot change graphics unless I have a 64bit system. I have just upgraded my parts and am hoping that I can run BF4 on ultra. Did not build the PC to run games at max settings but I am keen to see what it can do with a modern game. ++

MOBO: Asus Gryphon Z87
RAM: 16GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3
GPU: Asus HD 7850
CPU: Intel Core i5 4430
PSU: Corsair VS550

If I have left out any required info please let me know and I will reply as soon as I can.

Hi,
1) Yes, you can upgrade however you must get a new copy of Windows 7 or 8 and reinstall everything. Yep. Sorry.

2) I suggest Windows 8.1 64-bit OEM and get Start8 as well. I've been using W8 for over a year. It's better than W7 under the hood and Start8 avoids the new interface. Plus, we already see things for W8 exclusively starting.

3) Your HD7850 can't run BF4 on Ultra at 1920x1080 and maintain 60FPS. You'll want to tweak the settings a lot to achieve your goal so Medium/High might be more realistic.

If possible, run at 50FPS VSYNC'd or aim for 40FPS without VSYNC if you don't mind the screen tearing. Run FRAPS with VSYNC OFF while tweaking.

4) You should see a boost in performance once Mantle is released as a BF4 update...

Hi

You can not upgrade from a Windows 32 to 64 version, it will need to format the C:\ drive and re install every thing so destroying al your data on C:\

So you need to back up everything important to an external usb hard drive or USB memory stick beforehand
(even if you have a D: drive or partition back up every thing you want to keep, or unplug cables from D: if it is a second hard disk)

If you havea Retail Windows it should have both disks in the box but OEM system builder disks have either 32 or 64 bit disks only

Thanks for that!

I'll look into win8 a bit more, havent had much interest in it as of yet. Are you sure I can't just use the 'Custom Install' and start over with 64 bit? My win7 was the "upgrade" version and it came with both 32 and 64 bit disks.

I will be getting another 7850 soon, as well as a larger PSU. Would that be enough to run it at ultra? I would like to think I've made a decent base for me to upgrade from.

I realize this. I have just formatted a few extra internal hard drives I had laying around to use as backups.

You're saying that I can upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit relatively easily though?

Hi
This is not a upgrade
It is an install from scratch of win 7 64 bit
Then all your drivers

then all applications

I suggest you run. The Microsoft compatibility checker for win 7 64bit under win 7 32 bit first to see what problems may occur especially with multifunction printer, scanners and old but critical software

Would it be better to buy a new complete version of win7 pro or something like that? Or just use the 64bit disk I got with the win7 upgrade?

Ill look into the microsoft compatibility checker too thanks for that!

Could anyone chime in with my previous question (saves me starting another thread) - if I ran two hd7850's and a larger PSU, would I be able to run Battlefield 4 on higher/ultra settings?

1) You can't upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit, thus the 64-bit from the upgrade is useless to you. You would need to have XP or Vista 64-bit installed to use that, at least according to the Microsoft site though feel free to try.

I don't understand why you would have an UPGRADE version of Windows 7 anyway. Did you install XP or Vista to a Z87 motherboard then upgrade that to Windows 7? That seems odd.

2) Windows 8 64-bit OEM, plus START8 is the best option for you. I've been using that combo for a year. Windows 8 has improvements, and Start8 restores the interface (go into its settings to disable CHARMS for the desktop and adjust other settings).

3) BF4 will run very will with two HD7850's. I know a single HD7850 can get close to high at 40FPS to 50FPS but with severe dips at times. I generally prefer a single-GPU solution.

Be aware that you should have at least 2GB of Video memory for HIGH/Ultra and Crossfire won't add video memory, it clones it so if you have a 1GB HD7850 you have only 1GB.

I went ahead and played around with a 160gb HDD yesterday. Formatted it and installed XP and upgraded to win7 64bit. All is working fine for now. Just running updates and basic programs on it until I know its stable on my setup and the oldish HDD. I have a second 1TB HDD that will be for mass storage of games and music.

I am looking at purchasing win8 64bit though. - Will more than likely be upgrading to SSD's in the near future. So might start over then, again... Unless I can transfer my files and settings from win7 64bit to win8 64bit? Thats probably a topic for another thread though...

Thats good to hear about the cards thanks. I went ahead and purchased another hd7850 and a 750W PSU. They are 2gb cards.
