Hello Forum,
I recently got a new router to setup as repeater. I setup the mac addresses and such and set it to repeater mode. It works for around 5 minutes and then every device connected to the wireless interent loses connection to the network while the WiFi is still active. When i unplug the repeater everything works fine again. What's happening? Please ask me if you need more information. I really need this solved...
Thanks!

Hardware:
Netgear N750 (Repeater)
Netgear R6300 (Base)

Solution
I assume you're using the Netgear WDS-based repeating functionality, correct?

A word of caution; WDS is NOT a wifi standard, and as such, compatibility issues are VERY common. So much so, that for all intents and purposes you need the same hardware/firmware (sometimes even the same *model* from the same manufacturer). And if that wasn’t bad enough, it usually requires either WEP or no wireless security at all. Why? Usually because it can't handle the session key rotation required of WPA/WPA2. So when the session key is rotated, say every 5 mins, all the connections drop!

Unfortunately, manufacturers play down these issues and simply DUMP this feature on you without fully explaining all the GOTCHAS. I guess it’s embarrassing for...

Anyway, WDS is extremely finicky for these reasons. And I strongly urge ppl to NOT use it. Instead, use a universal repeater based on wifi standards (G, N, AC, etc.).

So the fact you’re having problems comes as no surprise. At the very least, disable wireless security just to see if that's indeed the problem.
