Hello,

I've used this forum before when reading other people's questions and whatnot, but I couldn't immediately find anybody with a problem similar to what I'm experiencing now, so I decided to write my own thread.

I have a WD 500gb notebook hard drive, Scorpio Black I believe, which failed about a month ago after 16 months of service. I got a new one, installed Windows and all that, and was hopeful that I would be able to retrieve my data from my old HDD. Before installing Windows I had booted from a LiveUSB to ensure that the hard drive was the source of the problems I had been experiencing, and when I was in the Linux USB, I tried accessing my hard drive, but got a vague error about being unable to mount it properly.

Once I had Windows up and running, I acquired a neat SATA-to-USB case thing that turns a hard drive into an external hard drive, and I also acquired a few data recovery programs, namely SysTools Hard Drive Data Recovery and Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery. Upon first plugging in the drive, I noticed it was listed as being named "System Reserved", with 71.8mb of 100mb free. Exploring it, I found this stuff:

I tried using both data recovery programs listed above but neither one displayed anything beyond what's shown here.

I tried researching what System Reserved means in the context of a failed HDD but couldn't come up with any conclusive results. I tried researching different ways of recovering data, from freezing one's HDD to taking out the platters and doing DIY drive surgery/transplants to spending $1000s on professional services. The HDD-to-external case I bought cost $4 and that's probably the maximum budget I'm willing to spend - the data would be nice to have back, but not essential.

Anyway, my question is: has anyone seen anything like this before? What's the significance of the "System Reserved" title of the drive? Is my data recoverable, and if so, how?

Thanks in advance for whoever reads this and answers!

OK - thanks! Got to the disk management screen which I have never used before. Do I need to buy one of these recovery software packages OR just make the large partition active to retrieve the files I want?
