The motherboard has power, but the fans are stuttering and the system won't boot

Hi there,

I am trying to boot up an old system that hasn’t been running for almost a year. The system worked just fine before I stopped using it. The system is not booting anymore, so I stripped it down to the bare minimum: ASUS M3A78-EM motherboard with an AMD Phenom X4 9850 (2500MHz) processor, 2x2GB Kingston HyperX DDR2 1066 MHz and a Recom PE-M600 PSU (600W).

I have inserted the processor in the right way, since there is only one way is fits. I added the fan in the right way on top of the processor, because the retention bracket lock clicks when I add it. I connected the CPU fan cable to the CPU_FAN connector on the motherboard. One of my questions is, would I need to add new thermal paste? It’s hard and dry, and it hasn’t been renewed in four years ;)

To continue, I added the RAM sticks in DIMM_A1 and DIMM_B2. I also tried booting with either one of them independently, in both slots, to no avail. In addition, I connected the PSU to the motherboard by connecting it to the ATXV12 connector and the EATXPWR connector. The PWR_FAN connector on the motherboard is neither connected to the PSU or the CPU Fan; this is right, isn’t it? It doesn't necessarily have to be connected to anything?I also connected the chassis to the system panel connector so that the on/off-button, reset, etc. are working. I did not add my GPU or any HDD’s to the system. I just need it to boot first so I can access the BIOS.

I already cleared the RTC RAM in the CMOS according to the steps on the motherboard manual. That didn’t help one bit. When I turn on the power, the motherboard’s Standby Power-led indicates that the system is on. Is this an indication that the CMOS battery is not empty and functioning? I do not hear any beep-sounds.

It can’t be one of the fans, because they are both showing the same behavior. They make the sounds of a car that is trying to start, but doesn’t have enough power. They are stuttering, It looks like it’s trying to start, they gain some momentum, and then go slower again. This goes on indefinitely. Could this indicate a broken PSU?

Here's a URL to a YouTube video I uploaded to see how the fans are stuttering:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6fcG7KK8SY

If you turn up the sound a little, you can hear how it's trying to start (0:25 especially).

Thanks for taking the time to read about my problem! I hope you can help me with some suggestions :)

if you have removed the cpu cooler (as you suggest) and the thermal paste has dried out.....you more than likely have a thermal issue....the cpu is overheating. You will need to remove and clean all traces of the old thermal paste from the cpu and cpu cooler, then re-apply fresh thermal paste.

Thanks for the quick answer! :) I will definitely do that then. But I have to point out that the problem already existed before I broke the seal between the processor and the heatsink.

clean your cpu cooler while you have it apart....lots of buildup evident in your video. If you have another PSU available, try using it to see if your system will boot. With no GPU installed just about any size PSU would work.

OK, so I completely cleaned the heatsink. There was indeed a LOT of dust in it ;). I also applied new thermal paste.
In addition I tried a brand new new PSU (500W), but the system is still showing the exact same behaviour.
So the problem is not the PSU, nor the dust in heatsink.

Any further tips? Or should I conclude that either the motherboard or the processor is dead?

Thanks!
