I'll be building my gaming PC in 2 or 3 weeks, and I am still confused about some things.. I'm going to spend 900 to 1000 euros on my pc parts (without OS, peripherals/monitor) and I'm considering an Intel Xeon E3 1230 V3 as my CPU, because it's the same price as the i5 4670K but has hyperthreading.. What do you think?
I want to buy these parts:
Processor - Intel Xeon E3 1230 V3 or Intel Core i5 4670K
Graphics Card - ASUS GeForce GTX 770 DirectCUII OC
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA Z87X UD3H
RAM - Corsair Vengeance LP 1600 MHz 8GB (2x4)
Power Supply - Corsair RM750
Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 7200rpm 3.5" HDD
Case - Corsair Carbide 500r White
DVD drive - ASUS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner

I don't think I will be OC'ing, but if I will I'll buy a Corsair Hydro H100i later on.
I do plan on SLI'ing my GTX 770 next year, that's why I need a Z87 board.

I hope you guys can advice me on this build.
Looking forward to building it in december :D

First of all, Xeon is a processor for server use , you can play games on it, but it is not build for that purpose, and it will not fit on that motherboard. It is LGA 1155 and the motherboard is for LGA 1150 processors. Keep the i5 and the motherboard, hyperthreading is useless in gaming.

No the Intel Xeon E3 1230 V3 is for the LGA 1150 socket, the V2 is for Ivy Bridge. I hear a lot of people saying it's a good CPU because it's cheap and is a bit better prepared for quad core+ optimised games.

Just saw it was v3, not v2, my mistake.
Anyway, the Xeon is $20 more expensive than the 4670k and it is locked processor. He plans to SLI/Crossfire in the future. The i5 4670k will come in handy when he will SLI/Crossfire and overclock the processor to ensure that there will not be any bottleneck. Btw why many people suggest gaming builds with i5's i7's and FX's, and nobody mentions Intel Xeon?

Why do you talk to me in third person? lol :/
Yeah I also was wondering why only the Germans seem to take interest in the Xeon line of processors for gaming, and not only for server-use..

I was talking to you in third person because i thought someone else wrote that, not you :pfff:
Btw i think you should stick to the i5, but that is you choice. Later you can sell it and buy another processor, but selling xeon, i don't think so, because it is more purpose build processor. I would never buy used Xeon if i was planing to build gamer pc or media works pc

On another thread someone is saying that hyperthreading does not benefit games like Battlefield 4, so it'd be useless to buy an i7 instead of an i5 for games that utilize 8 cores. Should I consider an AMD cpu? All my friends tell me to get an Intel processor though...

If that's your budget, I would go for an AMD build. The Xeon is 3.2 gHz and $244 (200 €) The Intel Core i5 4670K is 3.4 gHz and is $240 (199€). The Fx-8350 (AMD 8 core) is 4.2 gHz and $198 (150€) . With AMD, I reccomend a UD5 or 7 motherboard. Hard Drive, I would get a 1TB 10,000 RPM Velicoraptor and a 256 GB SSD 840 pro series (The two costing around 300€. So with the parts I recommend and much faster speed (HDD speed at least 6 times faster) and CPU 75% faster, it is around 540€. Plus the case, dvd, graphics care, and PSU, it's around 900-1000€. PS (buy from .com sites www.amazon.com or www.ebay.com ) You WILL save MUCH money, even with the cost of shipping. I am living in Germany for a year as a student ambassador of the USA and DE and you won't believe the prices of an EU country VS the USA. Have a great day and hopefully this might have helped :)

Well to tell you honestly, intel processor are better but whey you consider the price/performance ratio, or you are on a budget, there is nothing wrong with amd. For example the i3 4340 is $159 and the FX8320 is $147. The amd is clear winner because it will destroy the i3. It has 8 cores and it is better in every category, while the i3 is dual core and it is locked. Not to mention that in some categories the FX will stand to i5's and i7's. And btw for my next build i am planing to get AMD, better "cheap out" on the processor and save for better GPU. I7+GTX760= $550, FX8320 + R9 290 = $550, so wich is better :)

You are exactly right. I do think if the budget was 1500€ definitely go for a Intel, but if you are wanting a good gaming computer and have a 350€ graphics card alone, go for AMD.

Yeah I just looked it up and the US dollar is worth 26% less than the euro!! Awesome, because I'll be able to get much better parts :) But do you think the shipping will go allright? It's a long way from here ;D And are there any import taxes?
Thank you for your suggestion, enjoy the rest of your weekend :D

A little late but, thanks for the offer. I made my choice and I was able to buy some more expensive parts. I did buy them from a local store, because I looked up how much it would cost to import so many goods from the USA, and it was a bit too expensive. I'm very happy with my current PC, and I hope it'll keep running like a champ for the next couple o' years.

Also, I did consider getting an SSD later on. But with Windows 8.1 installed, I don't think it'll be necessary. The boot time is great on my WD Blue :D
