If I add 2GB memory to a 2GB pc what amount of Memory should I get

My PC already has 2BG, I purchase and added what was said to be a 2GB upgrade. My PC status report shows on 3 GB of RAM. Should it not have a total of 4?

Question: what cpu and mainboard do you have? do you have a discreet gpu ( add in ) I ask because on board gpu will use system ram as well.

you can also try these:

Go to MSConfig => Boot tab => Advanced Options and uncheck "Max Memory"

In your BOIS:

Advanced-> CPU Configuration -> Memory Setting-> Memory Configuration-> Hardware Memory Hole -> Enable

Thank all of you for taking the time to read and reply to my question. My nephew came by and explained to me that in order to get 4GB I have add a 2GB update to both slots in my PC. I misunderstood how the upgrade worked. Thank you for your help.
