Hi all.
Finally getting round to a very long overdue rebuild and need your guidance please. Absolutely everything needs updating eventually but I can't afford to do that right now so the first step is to bring the core of the machine up to date now and then I can improve further in a few months.
Purpose of system: Mixture of home/office use, constantly on internet, some gaming and movies. Ideally something I can upgrade in stages going forward but will generally serve well for a good 2/3 years at least.
OS: I'll be upgrading from XP to Win7 or 8 at the same time, but I'll buy separately once I've decided which.
Overclocking: I never have but may give it a go at some point - definitely not yet though so can't rely on buying lower parts and OCing up immediately.
Gaming requirements: For now, good framerates in latest titles at med-high. I will update the monitor soon but don't need anything flashy and I don't necessarily need max settings.
Budget: Approx £500 for now
Priorities for this rebuild: CPU, MoBo, GPU, RAM, SSD
So...I'm planning to recycle the following for now:
Case: Antec Nine Hundred (case is fine but has no USB 3.0 so need to find a solution to that at some point)
PSU: Corsair HX520W (is this good enough for now?)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 320GB (will replace later but it's not urgent right now)
Monitor: LG Flatron L1710M (stop laughing! Will update fairly soon)
No need to worry about keyboard, mouse or OS for now.
My first draft parts list is here: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/RS78/saved/2UvJ and listed below:
CPU: i5-4670K (see below)
MoBo: GA-Z87X-D3H (am I skimping too much here?)
GPU: MSI GTX660 2GB (or would a XFX Radeon HD 7870 XT 2GB at an almost identical price be a better choice?)
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X - 8GB (2x4GB) @1866 (quite a few similarly priced options here so open to any suggestions)
SSD: Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB
On the CPU, I know I don't need the 4670K over the 4670 if I'm not really an OCer, but for £3 difference it seems rude not to. For the more substantial saving (considering I'm over-budget), I'd be more interested to hear your thoughts on dropping to a 4430 or something and what that would compromise.
Been a member (read 'lurker') for a while so I know this is the place to get the right feedback. Many thanks in advance.
