Hey guys I'm changing my motherboard soon to allow me to crossfire 2 r9 280x's I am wondering if this config will work:

OS: windows 8.1 PRO
cpu: I7-2600K
cpu cooler: h80i
motherboard I am going to buy: MSI Z77A-G45 Gaming was considering asrock z77 extreme 4 but this one is slightly better for the same price in my country. Also looks sweeter in my opinion.
GPU's I will xfire: 2x Sapphire r9 280x TOXICS
Power supply: Corsair RM850 watt

I am upgrading from a 7850 and p8z77-v lx ( only supports 16x 4x crossfire and no sli, also having some windows 8 compatibility issues with it )

I'm sorry,if you already have the 2600K you´re right, there´s no sense in upgrading the cpu than.

The 2600K will work fine on that motherboard, but you won´t get the pcie 3.0 speed out of the pcie slots.
Just like with a pcie 3.0 gpu in a pcie 2.0 slot won´t get more speed than the pcie 2.0 standard allows.

I´m not even really sure whether there will be a botleneck and if so how big that will be,but it can´t be big enough to spend an extra $300.

actually since I am not swimming in money right now I'll stay with the 2600k for now. It works fine for me and has great overclocking capability. since the 280s are rebranded 7970s ghz the bottleneck in running them in crossfire should be minimal.
maybe 3% less performance than a newer cpu. clearly 300 euros for a new cpu is not worth 3% extra gpu performance.
Or is there any other problem that can happen.

no ofcourse not silly! my i7-2600k has been serving me well for quite a bit now, only recently started looking to overclock it and boy does it go high and cool.
I wown't swap my cpu until it dies since they are so expensive.

the items I put in bold in my first post are the ones I am looking into buying sorry should've specified that.
my initial worry was if the power supply would be enough to power these power hungry cards and if everything would be compatible with my motherboard.

Well i'm sorry sir,i should've read better. :ouch: ;)

No problems there, the power supply is a very good one and a high enough wattage. For the rest,if it would fit on or could connect to your old motherboard it would do with the new.

thanks a lot for the help :) I will order the msi z77a g45 gaming then!
Is there a chance my pc would not boot windows anymore since it thinks it is a different pc? I am using windows 8.1 pro at the moment.

Yes,didn't think of that. You probably will have to reinstall,if that works. From what i know the product key get's stored in the bios (=get's linked to that one) and maybe you even have to buy a new windows because of that.

You better ask this in the Windows 8 section to be sure.

Because my copy is legit I should be able to just call to microsoft and ask them to fix it. since it isn't a different computer.
if I have to get a new copy of windows 8 I will be pissed

I googled around on this topic and the problem only occurs in windows 7 OEM and before in windows 8 u can just boot of your hard drive/ssd and all will be well, there is a chance it will pop up a windows asking for the registration key and if it doesn't work a call to microsoft and they give you a new key.
and all is well.
Thanks for the help, my questions are resolved!
and hopefully tomorow my computer will boot on my new motherboard.
