So the word about CryptoLocker is pretty scary, and my understanding is that I need to back everything up and then take it offline. I keep everything backed up on an internal 2TB. I'd rather not have another external drive, which I guess I'd power up and down.

Is there a way via software to take a hard disk or partition offline and bring it back online when needed, In Windows 7 64? I don't see a way to do that in the Windows Disk Management, but maybe I'm missing something. I see lots of suggestions how to bring an offline drive online but not the reverse.

Excellent idea, Haven't tried that, and I have no idea how long it'll take to upload a TB or so. Google seems to offer "unlimited" storage. Is that literally true, or is there a better free or cheap service to try?
Thanks.

Well, it would take a while to transfer that TB, but thereafter uploading to cloud storage should be manageable. http://blog.laptopmag.com/whats-the-fastest-cloud-storage-service indicates that Google Cloud Storage uploads at about 80MB a minute, so that TB would take about 9 days. It might take a couple hours to back up my critical, irreplaceable files, and once all current files are uploaded, any new and modified files would easily upload overnight.

I'm looking up how to create a hidden partition, but in any case you might as well back up to the cloud as well as a local disk. Probably a good idea to keep off-site backups anyway, as the ultimate fall-back. And if CryptoLocker doesn't get to the local backup disk you can restore from there in a hurry.
