There are so many links, studies, etc. All I want to do is feel confident that I am buying an external hard drive to hold my notebook computer's backup, which is 60.3 GB on my Local disc (C) I want a HDD that is reliable.

I have been using the 1 TB HGST (Hitachi) Touro Mobile external HDD for almost a year now: http://www.touropro.com/product/touro-mobile/
I was attracted to it by a sale posted on a photography forum that I frequent. Here is where I bought it: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/846319-REG/Hitachi_0S03454_1_TB_Touro_Mobile.html
As you can see on this site, this HDD has a 4.7 star rating based on 327 reviews, which is very good in my book. Most ppl don't bother to review a product which they are satisfied with but rather it seems that most reviews are written by disgruntled users.

I have been very satisfied with the performance of this drive. Highly recommended!
No external HDD is reliable to my knowledge. Anyways if you have to get one then go for the one which gives you longer warranty. Seagate and WD are good to try.

And handle with care if you want longevity. Don't drop it. And eject the drive properly by right clicking on it. And try to keep it cool. Good luck.

I recently picked up a 1TB WD Elements and I'm quite loving it. no idea on LONG term reliability, and the warranty is only on the drive itself and not on the data.

do you have any old drives that you're no longer using? maybe allocate one of those as a backup drive. I had a 100G ex-laptop drive, so bought a $15 USB3 case for it and now I have a portable 100G external. I use that one for OS image backups and very important personal files, and then stuff the drive into my firearms safe. I use the WD for daily transport of files between work and home.

I like to have my data as protected as it can be. I use an old HDD as a backup internally. I also back up important things to an external HDD which is an old 100g from an old laptop that I have formatted and put in an enclosure from Amazon. They are extremely cheap. If you are just copying data and not running it a bunch an expensive enclosure isn't really needed. If something is really important it goes to the external 100g AND the cloud. I store the external in a fire resistant gun safe.

I think the cloud is about as safe as it gets. It might cost a little money, depending on the amount of data we are talking about but it is money well spent for peace of mind. IMHO.
