Hi there. First time posting, so this may be in the wrong category.

I'm having a problem with which seems like my USB 3.0 expansion drive on my PC. The PC was only bought and built less than 6 months ago, but only recently am I experienceing the problems. I am running Windows 7 Professional. My Motherboard is the Asus Z87-C.

For some reason whenever I connect my USB 3.0 HDD to my computer, it constantly powers on and off every few seconds. The icon never displays in My Computer. This HDD is one that has been removed from a laptop, fitted with a SATA to USB 3.0 connector, and then connected with a new 1M USB 3.0 cable. Other 3.0 HDDs work well when connected, even through the same port.

This HDD used to work before, when I was using a smaller 3.0 cable, but when that broke, I bought another cable. However, the current cable will still work with another 3.0 HDD that I have. This HDD will also work when connected into Laptops, and other computers, so I am under the impression that my expansion card is to blame.

I have been unable to find any setting which will allow me to provide more power to my expansion card, and searching the internet didn't seem to help either.

TL;DR: My HDD constantly connects and reconnects to my computer, but will work on other computers. I think it is a poer problem, but am unsure how to fix it.

Thankyou.

Solution
1) Is the USB bay that you are using a self power type or does it take all its power from the motherboard?
2) Are you using the latest USB 3.0 drivers?
3) Have you tried reformatting that HDD?
4) if all other HDDs work barring that one, it's either drivers or there is a controller/drive fault of some kind that manifests when you use it with the board.

1. All the power comes from the motherboard.
2. Yep, I installed all of the latest drivers in an effort to solve this problem, still, nothing.
3. It has been reformatted before, after being used as my laptops main HDD. Unfortunately, I have a fair bit of data on this HDD and I would rather not loose it.
4. It's just strange that I have been able to use this HDD before, with no issues. Hmm.

Windows 7 does not support usb 3. Your actuall usb 3 drives will work connected to the comp but will only run at usb 2 speeds. Windows 8 and 8.1 support usb 3. But putting a hdd in a usb3 caddy will not work with widows 7

What do you mean? and are you sure?

If you use the third party drivers for the win7 like the intel or Renesas, then the USB3.0 is fine.
