So I'm building a new PC that will be used for day to day normal use, rendering, gaming, and maybe a little editing here and there and I got my hands on a brand new 5.1 home theater system. What would be the best sound card for a high end 5.1 home theater system without breaking the bank (~$200)? OR would the onboard audio of the Asus Maximus VI Hero suffice (I have no idea how the sound quality is)?

A few years ago I would of said the sound blasters was about as good as it gets but now a days the onboard sound is so much better then it has been in years so with that ... I would try the onboard sound on your board first and go from there hate to see you toss money away if not needed but I can suggest a few good ones after research tho but the onboard sound on the boards these days have really gotten to be pretty damn good compared to a few years ago!

Hell my biostar hi fi board has awesome sound for what I paid for it that's another thing that's going to be eou end of use audio cards because the onboard cards or chipset have come such a long way these days. sound I say end of life eol lol

I have used them the past 3 years so far out of 5 board 1 flaky but all in all been good but my next build wont be with biostar because they haven't offered me as a consumer what I want or need in my next build... It will either be asus msi asrock since I refuse to use ecs and even tho they make a lot of the boards out there or at least at one time for all these companys there boards are lacking the features and options I want... I may even consider Giggabyte but there last bad video card left me saying wow r u serious lol 3 days and dead!

My Gigabyte experiences have also been very hit or miss. Never an issue with Asus though. And I'm starting to recommend Asrock to people now as well. My current system has an Asrock board and it's one of the most stable I've ever worked with for overclocking.

ya I am on a stuper weather intel 4670 or a 8350 next build myself I don't want to di lid the hawswell to get better cooler but I may as with the 8350 its the top tier of the amd chips other then the over priced and over heated 9300 series of chips which is a basic cherry picked 8350 so with that said IM SITTING HERE IN LIMBO I have everything for my next build except a card gpu board and chip so it may swing either way wait till first of year see what the new apu is all about or go with the 8350 or the intel 4670 times a ticking

The 3570 is a fine chip and be overclocked a lot and it goes use less but I am looking forward because it seems intel uses a different socket ever 6 months and amd don't but then again it may come down to chip and board combos soder in before we all no it intel did this in a way back before the pent was out with the 486 33 MHz had a heck of a time to remove a soldered in chip to upgrade a customers pc back then to a so called mmx cpu lol but that's back in the day....
