I love windows 7, its been very reliable and free
but I'm building a new gaming system soon
and will need an OS.

Im open to the metro, but I hate advising.
Especially on my OS, it would be like someone coming into your house and putting flyers up.

Im leaning towards 8 because of the latest direct x and SSD support.
I'll probably download a start menu to make it more windows 7 like.

But id like to know if windows 8 has any restrictive or annoying features that would affect my freedom to use my computer however I like.

For example, dose the metro have any advertising in it that I can not remove?
Dose it force me to use any programs, browser, media player, etc?
Can I uninstall any of these programs I don't won't?
Can I install and use whatever programs I like? (Provided there windows compatible)
Dose windows 8 have comparability issues?
Can you see Microsoft sneaking any unwonted updates/features on to 8, like what was going to happen with the Xbox One with that DRM stuff?

The most important concern in my criteria is freedom to use my OS in what ever way I like. :) Like windows 7 :)

If I installed some kind of start menu and removed the metro would is basically be the same as 7?

Sorry, a lot of questions but would appreciate answers to as many as possible.

What do you think? :)

Windows 8 is everything Windows 7 was except better and it is not outdated and obsolete like Windows 7 is now. I have yet to see any advertising what so ever in Windows 8 and do not even know what you are talking about there?

I have yet to find any program or game that does not work and work very well with Windows 8.1.
As far as Start Menu hacks, that is what they are hacks, I have never used one would never use one and would never suggest one they are a abomination and should be locked from even being used in the OS! Metro is great and after 5 minutes of use you would never want to go back to just a start menu anyway.

But then even with Windows 7 I hated the Start Menu and really never even used it. It just took way to long to find...

But then even with Windows 7 I hated the Start Menu and really never even used it. It just took way to long to find anything with it. Every time you needed something from it you had to click start all programs scroll to the folder you wanted open that folder and then finally run the app way to long! Windows 8-8.1 has cut most of those steps out.

Plus Windows 8.1 boots my system faster apps and games load faster. Gaming performance is the same or better in every game I have played.

Overall I find Windows 8.1 to be much better than Windows 7 and I really liked Windows 7 but the truth is it is now outdated and obsolete just like Windows XP before it.
