So I have windows 7 at the moment and have been wanting to upgrade to 8/8.1 and I just found out I can get windows 8.1 Embedded for free through my university. My question is does Embedded version work as well in every way compared to the normal 8.1 version. Is it something I can install on my gaming PC without an issue or is it for other stuff. Also can I just install it over windows 7 or would I need to put it on a USb drive to install it. Finally if I do install it would I lose any files or would it cause issues. Thanks.

You should be able to upgrade 7 ->8.1 without the loss of any files sans WMC which most people don't use anylonger and you can DL that later if you want it. Embedded version is the same as retail it just comes with the components installed for use with thin clients. You won't need to do anything other than click the setup executable and the installer will do the rest, you'll only need a thumb or disk if you're unable to download it directly to your HD via the internet.

I just installed it by dreamspark last night. I can tell you there is no difference between embedded version and retail version but embedded version has less pre-installed softwares, you won't see calender, news and so on in the start screen. However, I have a problem, does that key can only be activated once? Now I intalled it on my hdd and maybe later I'll buy a ssd, can I install it on my ssd again with the same key?

Yes, but you'll likely need to use the automated call in activation phone system with MS. When you reinstall it will prompt you to activate,if it can't a phone # will be provided. I had to do this several times and haven't ever had an issue.
