I have a HP p6-2171a desktop Intel Core i5 3450 quad core 3.1GHz, 6GB DDR3, 300W PSU and a Radeon 7450 card (which I read everywhere is crap).

My son wants me to buy BF4 but I dont know if it will run on this. Will I need a new graphics card? And PSU? Or will it be OK?

PSU is a joke. Graphics card is a joke. No it will not play BF4 to any satisfaction. You would need both a new card and PSU probably. depends how good is acceptable. You could maybe sqeeze a R260 in within the power envelope but it wouldn't really give you umphh for BF4.

I would suggest to upgrade the card. Even if the card runs it, your would be playing at 800x600 With low fps on low settings. It would not be enjoyable. I think you should buy a better psu and update the graphics card.

What card and PSU would you suggest that was still in processing range for CPU?

My spec is

HP p6-2171a desktop
Intel Core i5 3450 quad core 3.1GHz,
6GB DDR3

What is the lowest spec GPU that can run with this CPU and will I need to upgrade by PSU? to run BF4

Thanks a lot if you can help.

With your budget you're 'borderline' (depending on the PSU you can find) for the MSI Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB at $160 before $30 rebate. It's should give you 15-20% better performance over the 7850 in BF4.

Simply following the rebate instructions guarantees near-100% success if you can handle the 'cash flow' for the initial purchase.

Here is the PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk III Series 500W Modular Power Supply for $80 before rebate and promo code that will ultimately hit less than $60.

A modular PSU may work best in your HP desktop as they tend to get a bit cramped.

I have the same issue with the same HP - my son got BF4 but runs it on my laptop rather than the HP due to video card issue. I'd like to upgrade the HP for him.

BUT...he has a strong pref for Nvidia cards - would it be possible to swap out the Radeon for an Nvidia (plus new power supply)?

The issue with the GTX760 is it runs 'smoking hot' at load and might create issues in a smallish HP 'BTX' case.

The 660ti, or even a 670 may be a better go ...

**edit**
If any of them will fit!
9.5 inches is likely the max length ... and that's if you can get to the power.

I actually didn't pay attention to it until a guy posted about 85-86C in Battlefield, which is really too toasty for the case (most have a single fan at the lower-back at the CPU). Even worse is really the case ventilation (and no other place to mount a case fan even if you wanted to) ... and as noted above, the ACX GTX760 is exactly 9.5 inches long (but, it does have top-mounted power) -- if something is mounted in the drive bay in line with the PCIe slot he will be hard-pressed to make it work.

The WindForce GTX760 has 3 fans, and 11 inches long --- it simply will not fit in an HP 'BTX' case

edit: Oh ... and the GTX760 is essentially an nVidia 'refreshed' over-clocked 670 ...

The after market 760's temps dont look bad, and Asus usually do a good job with coolers.

Actually, the 760 uses the same gpu as the 670 but with less cores enabled and a higher clock speed. The 670 performs better than the 760.

Regardless, 80ish 'c on a 760 blower style reference cooler is fine IMO, the GPU is rated to 97'c and most of the air will be exhausted with these style coolers, so wont heat the case too much.

Update.... eventually I bought an NVIDIA Gigabyte Geforce GTX650 OC 2GB and 600W PSU. The PSU Installed fine but the GPU was a disaster. I tried everything over two week period....installed it 20 times, installed drivers from Gigabyte, from Nvidia, unstalled onboard graphics, restored PC, contacted Nvidia/Gigabyte/HP, booted Safe Mode then installed...no one could help. I did see the card 3 times but it reverted back to the onboard graphics, and then in the end I uninstalled the onboard and it just stopped working unless I put back the original Radeon card (Note that there is no option on the P6 to override the Onboard graphics in the BIOS, which seems to be a fundamental flaw). I live in HK where there is no return policy so I'm resigned to selling for half price. I'm not prepared to by a Radeon to see if that works instead. So I will be buying him BF4 for his PS3 instead (which is a shame as they are region specific and all the kids in HK play on PC. All I can suggest is you try a Radeon. Let me know how it goes.
