The Belkin router 12yr old has been a trooper but moved into bigger house and have weak signal areas- so I added a Netter extender - I really think it is helping. Some people say better performance if you upgrade router and also use same brand which is right and which is just manufacturers wanting mo money??

I would keep my eye out for deals this weekend and Monday, if your devices support wireless N than you may benefit from and upgrade.

at a very minimum you should make sure the firmware is updated, belkin's (which I own and love) have been found to have some pretty bad vulnerabilities in the old firmware versions on many routers, although most vulnerabilities require access to the lan.

If you're happy with the wireless performance, then no need to make any changes.

I suspect with a 12 year old router, you are probably using Wireless 'G'. Best throughput speeds you will see on 'g' is around 20Mbps, on a good day, at the right distance. Add in the repeater, and performance will degrade further in the area of coverage within the extender range, and where the extender range and Belkin range meet.

If you're upgrading, you will get Wireless 'n' or 'ac', as that's all that's available in this day in age. Either will give you a big boost in performance and will likely be compatible with your extender.
