z77 or z87 for an i7 3770k?

I know (relatively) nothing about pc hardware. Long story short - i've decided on picking up and i7 3770k. I'm trying to find a motherboard to go with it.

The people at my local computer store (canada computers) are saying that i will need a z87 motherboard... Is that true?

Any and all recomendations are welcomed.

No. The i7-3770k falls under the 1155 CPU socket category, which should be paired with a Z77 motherboard, as that is what the motherboard will support, a 1155 socket CPU.

The i5-4770k is 1150 socket, minor difference in the socket number, but that still matters, and it should be paired with a Z87 motherboard.
