I was thinking of installing a linux distro and I want to know what you guys would recommend. Its mainly for basic functions and maybe the odd game or two.

Hard to go wrong with Ubuntu. Get it here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/download

It is widely used and supported and even supports Steam for games. Good luck!

Much depends upon your personal preferences. Ubuntu is the largest but may not be to your tastes or needs. The Desktop Environment, DE in Ubuntu by default is Unity and is somewhat more RAM intensive than others. The Unity name comes from the desire that the next Ubuntu in april will have a Unified interface that will work on phones, tablets and desktops.

I have on my desktop for DEs Unity, KDE, Cinnamon, LXDE. I have made a copy of them using remastersys so that I can install any of them onto other peoples computers depending on their hardware or personnel preferences.

Linux Mint is also very popular and more old school windows DE. It also accesses the Ubuntu software repositories, where you get additional software from, so you lose no expandability.

I also keep a copy of Puppy Linux on a 1gb USB that I use for repairing systems. Very handy getting Windows fixed.

If you want to see what they all look like and where to download go to distrowatch.com
