So recently I got a new lenovo laptop, and wanted to hook up my Behringer c1 microphone to it via the headphone/microphone combo jack, unfortunately it is not recognised by my laptop at all, it's not the microphone as it works with other laptops/PCs, so it has to be an issue with my lenovo laptop, I also tried hooking up a different microphone, I used a SingStar ps3 microphone with an audio jack, and what surprised me was that instead of it being recognised as a mic, it was recognised as a speaker and infact sound came out of it which was rather weird.. so my question is, how do I get my microphone to be recognised? one more thing to add, when I plug in my iPhone headphones in with a built in microphone they're both recognised and I use the earphones and the mic at the same time, I hope you guys can help me, thanks in advance.

Yeah.. your plugging a MICROPHONE into a HEADPHONE / MIC Jack. Meaning it is setup to SEND sound to the plug as well as RECEIVE sound. What you would want is a MICROPHONE ONLY jack. The normal consumer uses a laptop with a headphone/mic, so they are built for that functionality (hence the iPhone Headphone/Mic works correctly, but just a Mic does not). Your best solution would be to get (if your insisitive about using a mic ONLY with this laptop) a add on USB soundcard with dedicated MIC only port and do it that way

But how comes if I plug in headphones only (without a mic) they work by themselves but the mic doesnt? and I recently purchased a USB splitter for a mic and headphone jack and it still doesn't recognise the microphone. where could I get a USB soundcard like that? thank you though

The plug itself has multiple connections. If you look at the 3.5mm end of the headphone and the mic you will see the groove lines are in different places, inside the port they are both there. The problem your running into is the 'feedback' that the connection makes (transmitting headphone sound) onto the mic causes it to fail. Where as the headphones does not 'require' to 'push' sound / electrical signal over the connection, so it just happily receives the sounds and plays normally.

I mentioned you will not have a way to make that port work as you singularly wish, you need to go to BestBuy, Fry's Electronics, etc. or look on Amazon / Ebay for a USB Soundcard, and check the ports it lists on it, as well as make sure it will work under your version of windows.
