Hi,

I'm trying to clone my HDD onto a Samsung 840 EVO ssd. I've tried the Samsung Data Migration tool, but I keep getting an error about 20 seconds in, saying the clone had failed and giving me the following code: 400230 [061b66]. I called Samsung and the guy said they don't support Windows 8.1, so he basically gave me the run around. I downloaded EaseUS, but it won't recognize that I've got an SSD connected (I'm using a sata/usb cable to connect it). Any thoughts? Help would be greatly appreciated.

Other info: It's a brand new HP Envy laptop. I know the cable works because I had successfully cloned and installed the ssd on a brand new windows 8 laptop before I realized it had dead pixels. I returned it and they sent me a windows 8.1 laptop.

Make sure you defrag, virus scanned, disk cleanup, etc your old HDD so when cloning no issues will occur. You want it squeaky clean,

Also, try Macrium Reflect, it's free and they do a lot more than clone HDDs

Secondly, I found another post from Toms Hardware from someone who had the same error code as you.

I had to contact samsung to find out any information on this error code. I have received a reply and my ssd is now working and the problem is solved. Here is what you have to do.

My reply from samsung... Please, defragment the HDD before starting the migration, and desable the Page File, the Windows system restore point files and the Hibernation files.The Windows system restore point files can be eliminated by turning of restore point protection for the C drive. Right mouse click on my Computer --> properties then system protection. The hibernation file can eliminated by turning off sleep mode hibernation in the Control Panel --> Power Options --> Advanced settings. The page file can been eliminated by right mouse clicking on my Computer, properties --> Advanced-->Performance-->Advanced the click on the change button. Unchecked allowing Windows to manage the page file then select no page file. Reboot your PC and shrink the C partition. Then go back and turn on paging, restore points for the C partition and hibernation. Now reboot again.Connect the SSD directly via Sata or via usb.

This worked for me I hope it helps everyone that has the same error code.

Attempt this and try using Macrium Reflect (youtube how to clone a HD with Macrium Reflect if you are unsure how to) and let us know how it went.

I had neglected to mention that I had already seen the other thread about the 400230 error and had tried the workaround to no avail.

I downloaded and tried Macrium Reflect, but it gives me a message saying there's insufficient space. The HDD is 1TB of which 150GB are used. The SSD is 500GB. The program shows the HDD as having 5 partitions:
1)Winre NTFS Primary 256.3MB;
2)No Name FAT32(LBA) Primary, 101.9MB;
3) (None) Unformatted Primary 128MB;
4) Windows (C: ) NTFS Primary 131.62GB;
5) Recovery (D: ) NTFS Primary 19.66GB (there's also a blank space between partitions 4 and 5 showing 500gb--which I assume is a result of shrinking the partition from the first workaround attempt).

It then shows the SSD as having 4 partitions, the same as the first four in the HDD but without the Recovery partition and without the blank space.

Thanks!

Update: I got it to work with Macrium. Instead of just selecting them and clicking clone selected partitions, I manually dragged them and that somehow did the trick. Thanks for the help.

I had the same problem I even tried a secondary free software still wouldn't work

Then I found the solution. Right click on the DataMigration software icon on your desktop and you'll see an option for check for "troubleshoot compatibility" Windows will run a check and the solution that was provided Run in Windows 8.0 compatability mode. I did this and it worked fine. I also was running the software in Administrative mode. Hope that helps

I got a same problem here ages ago. it found out it was not in windows8.1. question : How copy a system into a disk when u use that system at same time ? Look at the intel migration which is done good as it escapes the windows and utilize in different platform like use a bridge. I dont know but I failed alot same as others.

Maybe a different partitions in hdd including Windows Recover tools, Boot, System disk etc. These can been viewed in Disk manager in windows.

So you need just boot, windows recovery tools and main storage partitions
Fat32 260mb,
NTFS 1.5g windows recovery tools (mine just used up 1g of 1.5g, just in case in future update)
NTFS primary partition (such as C:, D:,...disks).

for that suing Paragon Hard Disk Manager clone you C disk and fix boot. but I used in windows PE system which was installed in usb stick. I dont know it can be used in normal windows8.1 system due to easy for me and pity for my SSD. that Paragon Hard Disk Manager also can clone you C disk.

Last, windows 8.1 may have initial start problem as boot is not fully fit. u can get in recovery mode. in there, choose advance ?^&^ (I cant remember it sorry), and then select Auto fix. after automatic restarted it should be done

I have done this a long time ago. sorry for rough induction.

Hi,

I had the same error. I had read a lot of possible solutions on several forums.
Then I decided to try other migration software.
Seagate Discwizard worked prefect. :)
