So, I just built a hefty rig, and I'm currently running Ubuntu on it (not sure if that is relevant here)
my wireless router seems to be working fine, but my new computer doesn't have a wireless adapter, and would rather hardwire it anyways - unfortunately, even when hardwired, it appears unable to connect to the internet - not even the router setup (192.168.0.1). I tried bypassing the router - direct modem>computer, no avail. The cable is fine - it will connect to my laptop no problem. So, I assume it is some sort of hardware proble on the computer end. Anyone have any ideas as to how I should go about fixing this? any troubleshooting help would be greatly appreciated.

Solution

Probably. There is a specific driver for the ethernet adapter.
