Newly built PC - will not connect to internet via ethernet cable

So, I just built a hefty rig, and I'm currently running Ubuntu on it (not sure if that is relevant here)
my wireless router seems to be working fine, but my new computer doesn't have a wireless adapter, and would rather hardwire it anyways - unfortunately, even when hardwired, it appears unable to connect to the internet - not even the router setup (192.168.0.1). I tried bypassing the router - direct modem>computer, no avail. The cable is fine - it will connect to my laptop no problem. So, I assume it is some sort of hardware proble on the computer end. Anyone have any ideas as to how I should go about fixing this? any troubleshooting help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. have you definitely installed the onboard Ethernet driver?
  2. Is that separate from the main motherboard driver installation?

Probably. There is a specific driver for the ethernet adapter.
