Do you need a DVI-D monitor to use a DVI-D port?

I currently have a GTX 650 Graphics card which has:

One Dual Link DVI-I, One Dual Link DVI-D, One Mini HDMI

I am using the hdmi and DVi-I (via VGA converter) just fine, but I can't get the DVI-D port to work. After looking it up, I've found that it's not compatible with VGA monitors. So my question is, do I need a monitor with a DVI-D port to work with my graphics card?

Also why don't they just put two DVI-I's in the graphics card when they are clearly more compatible?

Solution
As you have discovered, DVI-I does not pass signals for VGA converter (which is just a passive junction box). So you need DVI or HDMI monitor in that case.

As for why - dunno, probably this saves couple of cents off the price of the board ;)

DVI-D outputs a digital signal only, so only monitors and TVs with either DVI-D, DVI-I, or HDMI (through an adapter) can use that port.

Most video cards I've seen (admittedly, mostly ATI/AMD cards) that had 2 DVI ports were both DVI-I.

So if I had a monitor with a hdmi port, I could use a hdmi to DVI - D cable?
