I was just playing Crysis 2 for about 30mins and thought I'd check the temp of my stock MSI Radeon HD6850 as the fan was sooo loud: http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/?gid=1196&graphics=Radeon%20HD%206850%20MSI%20OC%208cm%20PWM%20Fan%20Edition it's not overclocked.

I've had it for about 5 months and kinda always wondered why it was so loud (fan on full) so I thought I'd check it out and it actually hit 103c!!! and was hovering around 97-99c...I stopped gaming left the fan at 100% and got it back down to 52c after a few mins....but this isnt right surely... Why did it get that hot? The ambient temp is 22c. It's Idling at 61c....I've only started playing Crysis 2 recently...on other games and Kombuster its reached around 85-87 in the past...but this can't be right....what shall I do? Was I sold a dud?

Is it the case (its small ATX http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Cases/Cases+with+PSUs/ARIAnet+Fusion+Black+Micro-ATX+Case+w%2F+500W+Power+Supply+?productId=53510&rqcType=r ) I have a fan at the front pulling air in, a fan at the back pushing air out (only 8cm) and the side was off and it still hit this temp.

Come to think of it, when try overclock my CPU...it gets too hot and I can only do a very slight OC, I have a Phenom x4 3Ghz...can only get it to around 3.4Ghz even with a arctic freezer pro 7.

Do you think it is the case?

I'm scared to game again now...thank god I didnt buy a 7870 tahiti that I had my eye on...would have melted in there!

What shall I do?

I just copied my build list here:

1 x AMD 960T Black Edition 3.0GHz Socket AM3 6MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed
1 x MSI RADEON HD6850 R6850 PM2D1GD5
1 x Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2 Socket 775, 1150, 1156, 1155, 1366, AM2, AM3 Heatpipe CPU Cooler
1x Kingston v100 96GB SSD
1x OCZ 64 GB SSD
1x WD 320GB 7200 2.5" Hard Drive
1 x EZ Cool Piano Black Micro ATX With 500W PSU
1 x G-Skill 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX Memory Kit CL9 (9-9-9-24) 1.5V
1 x Samsung SH-222BB 22x DVD±RW DL & RAM SATA Optical Drive - OEM Black
1 x Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 AMD Socket AM3+ 8 Channel HD Audio mATX Motherboard
2 x Artic Freezer 80mm Case Fan

There not that much room between bottom of the case and the graphics card...maybe 3cm....so hot air just blown down onto case bottom.....and I just realised the CPU cooler fan is blowing right on the graphics card...hmm it can only fit that way due to the RAM...great that was a stupid oversight by me.

Yeah well it started off as just a basic PC for office stuff...but then I kept on adding stuff....okay so 1st change the case yes....what can you recommend thats not very expensive? I'm in uk, and buy stuff from www.ebuyer.com and amazon.

cheeers.

Well I think hot air is getting trapped in bottom of the case, its cool around the cpu, ram etc and good airflow from front to back, but where the graphics card is, once its taken x2 slots, there's only 3cm of space until bottom of case below the GPU heatsink and fan.

When I turned it on this morning, its idling at 33c...that more like it...i'll try load up crysis again and see what temps it gets to.

The Corsair 350D is way out of my budget I'm afraid as is almost 100 pounds....is it that micro ATX cases are not suitable for a PC with a decent graphics card?

I will pull out the graphics card and check for dust as just cant see it properly otherwise, and report back maybe with a couple pics.

Thanks for your help so far!

Right well the GPU shot upto 88c in just 3 mins when playing Crysis2 so took PC apart gave a good clean...

The graphics card has quite a lot of dust in the heat sink, so I have cleaned this up as much as I can...still some there on the heatsink fins I cant get to. I snapped a fan blade off by accident as I was trying to unscrew the fan so I could get to the heatsink better but the screwdriver but slipped...doh!!.now stuck it back on with adhesive so when that's dry I will put the card back in.

I have noticed the CPU cooler Artic Freezer Pro 7 is not up to scratch...with AMD fitting you can either have it blowing hot air onto the graphics card or sucking hot air from the graphics card....so its just a up down or down up arrangement...this is rubbish as it means you cant get it to blow hot air towards the rear case fan. So I put the stock cooler back on with fresh thermal paste and CPU idling at 14c !!! instead of 35-41c!!! I think I will replace this with something that can blow hot air towards the rear case fan and then out of the case....hmm maybe this was a contributing factor to why the graphics card was over heating....

So any tips on getting to the dust in the heatsink of graphics card? Ive tried vacuuming but no luck....

Do you think the case is the issue...shame as I really liked this size, fits on bottom of desk and looks pretty cool...but I do want to get a better graphics card soon and overclock CPU so maybe I need to go bigger. But my budget really is 30 pounds for case as I have to get a new PSU also and some better fans as well as a new cooler....hmm all adding up...maybe I should just get a PS4...nah! :)

If you can afford the Silverstone SUGO SG09, you don`t need a CPU cooler unless you heavily overclock, because the huge top fan blows directly over the CPU.
Also, there`s a lot of airflow in that small case, but non-modular PSU will clutter the case.
I went with Silverstone PP05 short cables for my modular PSU, and I really like the cable management.
