Windows 7 only received one serves pack update wile XP enjoyed three, and Vista two.. I think.

Some say windows 8 it to windows 7 like Vista was to XP.

Wile its to doute an upgrade, was it really need or called for? Would windows 7 been fine for a few more years?
Was 8 just to cash in?
When could we expect windows 9 or whatever it may be called, will it be released to early?

What do you think? And why?

Good idea. If you just totally hate it you can always go with Windows 7. I would give it at least a few hours of using it before you make up your mind though. I have the feeling Windows 9 will be more like 8 than 7 so if you have to learn a new interface you might as well get started. ;)

Windows 8 was designed for portability and having the same desktop on your windows phone and windows tablet. Also its more for touchscreens but they did bring back the start button and older features in 8.1. I still prefer 7 and recently purchased it for my new build. Some like it some dont. I hear it takes some getting used to.

Windows 8 was released primarily to work better with touchscreen devices. Windows 7 is still a fine OS. I have Windows 7 on my desktop and one laptop and 8.1 on my other laptop. Personally I like 7 better but it's mostly because I am used to the old Windows interface I have been using since Windows 95.

Windows 8.1 is actually faster in quite a few benchmarks including gaming.

I too would of preferred for windows 7 to have more serves packs and to of stuck around for a few more years.
But I'm building a new pc soon and being the same price, I cant find a resign not to go with 8.

Yeah, not so much. Even 8.1 takes some major getting used to. My advice is to check out some Windows 8 guides. There are also some good videos on youtube.

I have been using computers since the early 80s. Windows 8 made my feel like a newbie for the first time in years. I still have to google how to do things sometimes.

anort3 do you think that windows 8 is still free and customisable in the way I use it like windows 7, is it more restrictive in any way?
Also dose the metro have ads in it, in the form of a store or something?
If so can I remove it?

There are links to the Windows store and depending on the brand of computer you buy the same old junk that will come on any new computer. You can uninstall anything you don't want though like always.

Windows 8.1 is still customizable but not in the same way 7 is. It's very different. Most people saying it's bad just haven't learned it well enough to be comfortable with it yet. As I said above it is actually faster than Windows 7 in most benchmarks. I'm still not fully comfortable with it yet but I have only had it for a few weeks now. Before I had this second laptop I had only used it a few times and was a hater. Now I don't hate it but I'm still more comfortable with 7.
