If its a lower end cheap motherboard that is current and not too old it should not be a problem really.

No, no, I don't have actually the parts, it was just a thought. Now that you've mentioned the cpu on the mobo - that's a good point. i suppose the true question could be, is there a cheap cpu out there that is suitable for a system with a high end gpu?

It all comes down to your total budget, you could get a decent i3 or i5 processor and get an affordable Asrock motherboard, and the 780 will work well.
