Question related to external hard drive use as hard drive

I have a external hard disk (ID) and it has some important data and i want to use it as a hard drive for my laptop. I have installed it on hard drive slot and now i am thinking of rebooting my windows 7 on it. But i dont know if it will run on it and what if i lost all data already on external hard drive...
please help me

Ok first off you already installed this external HDD into your laptop correct? Second did you have windows installed on the external HDD and you are thinking of reinstalling it now that you have put it in your laptop or are you just wondering if you can put windows on it in the first place? and third windows will work on any HDD if installed properly but when installing you will lose all your data. If you have already installed windows onto your HDD you have lost probably some or maybe most files.
