Getting fps far below 60 while according to the review I read I should be getting at least 50-60 on ultra.

What could be causing this?

I have a amd phenom x6 processor and 8 gig ram.. windows 7 64b

I'm looking around for possible causes... But if you can point me in the right direction I'd be most grateful!

Solution
go into your bios and disable thermal throttling and stuff like that. I had the same problem with my radeon r9 290. and I didn't buy an extra cooler so I manually set the fan to 100% when playing games and battlefield runs flawlessly on ultra for me

Im thinkgin it might be a bottleneck issue. I've never encountered this before so I don't know much about it. In the thread you have linked that person solved his problems by moving his game to program files instead of program files x86.. thats very strange to me. I might end up trying that though.

currently i have no idea what causes or solves bottleneck issues

Is there a way to move the game to program files without uninstalling bf4?

It might be your psu actually. It is recommended to have a 750w psu for the R9 290. (look under System Requirements. http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?pid=2044# )

Ok. So I've ordered a 750w psu and 16g of ram... hoping this might fix it. Next thing I'm going to look into is my hard drive speed.

Also, I have a 125g ssd and a 2tb hd. The 2tb drive has 3g/s speed.. perhaps this is too slow? I have installed bf4 on that drive

perhaps having 2 drives is causing stuttering or issues with ram since maybe the data is coming in at different speeds?

To answer the above questions, it's easy to move BF4 (and other games) if installed under Origin.

The op issue sounds like a bottleneck, but your CPU is not at 100%, how about your GPU?

I am downloading bf4 again so I haven't been able to test with it. However I have similar stuttering in almost every game. It's the same pattern. Like 4-5 seconds fluid 60+ fps then 3-4 seconds 20-25 fps.. then back to 60

So I just changed the cpu core affinity for skyrim from 6 to 4 cores and the priority to low and the stuttering is gone?!

I don't understand what this means but I'm sure somebody here knows?

I will try this with bf4 as soon as I have it downloaded.

What I have done so far is set the fan speed manually so the gpu doesn't overheat. I def need more wattage and my friend keeps telling me I just need more ram. I doubt that ram is the issue but I'm getting some for good measure. I also noticed my cpu runs hot.. idle at 60c .. so I've ordered a replacement fan and some thermal paste to address that. I ran checks on my hd's and they seem to be ok. That's about all I can think of right now. So I gotta wait for my new hardware to arrive. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.

Hi, I'm still trying to figure out a solution on this too. I have the same card and I want to get at least consistent something above 60.
