DisplayPort to HDMI Cable instead of an adapter?

Hi :)

I have a few questions regarding an eyefinity setup that I wanted to try.

So, tonight I purchased a third monitor and an adapter (that was not an 'active' adapter) to finish my 3-monitor setup and to use eyefinity with some games, Only to find out that I need an active adapter to get my setup working.

I will be going back to the store to get my cable refunded tomorow morning, now my question is, instead of purchasing an active adapter, would a Displayport To DVI (or HDMI) cable do the job or does this need to be 'active' as well? Or am I better off ordering a active adapter?

*Just some info about my setup*

- I have a PowerColour 7850 graphics card (exact same model as this Powercolor Graphics card
- I have forgotten the model / name of my monitors but they have a DVI, HDMI and VGA port.
- I am using the catalyst command centre application to setup the eyefinity.

  1. Hi, It has to be an active adapter:
    # The first two monitors can connect to the graphics card with any display output on your product: HDMI, VGA, DVI or DisplayPort.
    # The third (or greater) display must be connected to the graphics card via DisplayPort.
    # If your monitor does not have a DisplayPort connection, you will need an inexpensive active DisplayPort adapter for it. DVI to DP adapters can be had for less than $30 USD.

    No, it won't work.
    You need something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814999030
It's even cheaper. Not sure about the length.

Thanks so much for you help. I have decided to just go with This one

(I'm from Australia so newegg isn't an option but if you look at the description it supports eyefinity in anyway)
  5. Yes, it should work. It's an active adapter. You will also need a cable DVI to DVI.
