i can't get the wires out of the westinghouse 3 speed fan switch

I'm trying to replace my ceiling fan's 3 speed switch, but I can't get the wires to come out of the new switch. I pushed down the springs with a small nail, but I can't even see the wires.

Last time I had to do the same repair the wires from the switch and fan were wire nutted together. The switch wires were attached to the switch permanently.
