I'm wondering if I will be seeing significant bottlenecking with my AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz if I were to upgrade to a R9 270 or 280.

I'm interested in playing Battlefield 4 and Watch Dogs (when it comes out) in 1080p at high settings.

Unfortunately I will be unable to upgrade my CPU for 1 to 2 years.

The 270 is a better fit for my budget, but I'd consider getting a 280 if it would be usable in my next build up to two years down the line.

I could also overclock my CPU if that would be helpful.

Thanks!

well..
bottleneck..yes..
but not too much..around 10%-20% loose fps if you compare with the fastest common processor in cpu intensive games..

overclock will help..
it's time to squeeze all juice from your processor..
it'll help you to minimize bottleneck effect..

at least 3.8, and you'll see improvement, and it's even better if you can bring your processor to hit the 4.2GHz, wall of phenom II architecture..

yeah 4.2 would be great if it can do it. mine only got up to 4.1 before temps became an issue.

Thanks for the responses!

So if I'm planing to build a new rig in say...two years, is it worth spending the extra 100 now on a 280 and sticking that in the new rig? Or would it be better to get a 270 and just upgrade the GPU with the rest of the system when the time comes?

Get the best today what you can afford..
if you can buy a 280, then get it.

Newer games usually gpu intensive games..
So, processor performance just have a small portion rather than gpu to deliver smooth frames rate to your monitor..

and also, you'll overclock that processor, right..?

Yep, I should be able to get it up to 3.8 no problem with the air cooler I have (Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus).

I've been running my 965 black edition at 4.2Ghz for gaming for around 5 months with 2 HD 6870's. I recently bought a single R9 270x 4gb edition (£180) and it wipes the floor with the old HD6870's I had.
When not gaming I run my 965 at 3Ghz to prolong its life. Please note that I have an antec kuhler 920 water cooler for my CPU so that keeps my temps down below 55 degrees when thrashing the CPU.
The R9 270x 4GB plays BF4 on ultra at well over 50fps even when running my CPU at 3.8Ghz.

I have never experienced a real bottleneck problem with the 965 BE and the new AMD Beta driver (mantle) gives games like BF4 a huge boost in FPS, some report up to 20% increase on max frames.
