Brand new wireless mouse working but can't use wireless keyboard

I just bought a new wireless mouse because the old one stopped working (receiver damaged??) and now the mouse works but not my wireless keyboard. I cannot type. I have a desktop dell computer 6-7 yrs old) and I am not very computer savvy - please help me. Thanks

I have WINDOWS 7 Prof ( not XP)

Just like the mouse, the keyboard needs a battery inside it. Have you checked?
You also need to "pair" it with the USB receiver (see the instructions).
