i haven't been messing around with my computer as far as the partition and superuser stuff goes. the last time i was using it was when i was playing Battle for Wesnoth on it, but then i left it for about an hour and the battery died. when i plugged it into the charger and turned it on, i just saw a grub rescue prompt saying something about writing off the disk and "hd0". I'm considering re installing the operating system. i have the live disk, and i can boot it just fine as well, but i have an essay which i need to hand in for school on it. im prepared to reinstall my operating system, but if there is any alternative, im ready to try

My computer is a netbook: Dell inspiron mini. it was running Lubuntu 13.04 and has a 250 GB hard rive.

Help would be much appreciated

I would like a bit more info.

A full error message would be nice. What happens when you try to power it up now?

Should be easy to fix

Many options you can take to restore your bootloader:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Installing#Fixi...

You may also want to do a filesystem check. From livecd run filesystem check on your HDD.
  1. sudo fsck -a /dev/sdaX

where /dev/sdaX is the partition you want to run fsck.

Boot to your live disk and install boot-repair. easy as cake, accept the defaults first. If still no then let boot-repair check the disk as well under advanced options. You should also go ahead and copy your paper to a USB as long as you have the live disk running.

@PatMickgrat20: As for your essay:
Boot your live disk, connect to Internet, and use e.g. Google Docs to write it.
