so I need one (and eventually two) new 4TB internal drives, as my old 1.5T Seagate 7200.11 units are heading south (slowly, nothing super-critical just yet)
I'm not too brand-partial, but those 7200.11 drives are noisy when the spin-up, both as motor whine and head clicking. if all Seagate drives are like that, then I don't want it.
I bought a 2TB WD Red not long ago for some of my frequently-used files, and I'm honest that I can't tell the difference between powered-down and spinning-up - no noise at all, dead silent. and slightly faster to start playing a movie than the Seagate. so that's a plus for the Red.
anyhoo, the drives I need are 4TB, and I need two (NOT for RAID, just to separate the media types), so while I like the Red, I'm open to Green or Sea HD.15 or whatever else. I guess in order of priority:
must be silent / quiet (WD Red is a good level)
must be reliable (if Green, I'm ok doing the WDIDLE thing if that helps)
must be affordable
must be power efficient (at least better than the 7200.11 that it will replace)
doesn't need to be fast
it's almost like I'm describing the WD Green 4TB, but honestly I haven't looked at how Seagate or Toshiba or any of the other "brands" compare.
thoughts?
