Hi, I'm looking to build a gaming rig for my little brother, but want to stay in the 500-700 $ range.

What's the best that I can get? I was looking at the FX processors, are they worth it? Or should I go i3?

It really depends. If the OP is using 4+ core optimized programs or if he / she is using 2 core optimized programs.
The FX are 4/6/8 WEAK cores.
The Intel I are 2-4/4-4/4-8 FAST cores (cores-threads)
If you have a game that uses 4 cores the i3 will probably win due to it's hyper-threading yet a 6/8 core optimized game will run better on an AMD FX / i5.

As you can see here: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/697?vs=363
an I5-2400 (4 cores @3.1GHz) mostly beats an AMD FX 8350 (8 cores @4GHz)

According to the those benchmarks i5 beats FX in those games who dont requires more than 4 cores. i5 can provide what those games want. i know that the cores of intel's processor are faster than AMD's processors but what about latest games and what about the future proof gaming ?
Do you really think that i5 will beat FX in upcoming games that requires 4 or more than 4 cores :D  ?

Cool, so the next question is do I want to bother with a fx83xx series, or would a 63xx be more than sufficient? The six core is clocked 3.9, the cheaper 8 cores are 3.5...

From what I've heard the 6300 (the one I'm getting) can be overclocked by quite a bit. It depends on what you want to do on the system. (I know you have gaming on there but video editing could be another reason!)

It would beat it up to games that use 6 or more cores and you get the upgrade-ability to an i7 in the future. Not to mention the power usage difference!
