Do you need a good motherboard for overclocking?

Hello, I have a question. I am going to watercool my 8350 and I was wondering whether I should get the 990fx Sabertooth. Looking at the price tag of £135~ on Scan, I would like to know how important is the motherboard when overclocking just the CPU even though I only run one GPU. I will not be overclocking anything else. Could I get away with a cheaper alternative? If so, which one would you recommend? I tried to google this information, however, I didn't find much apart from: Better mobos give you faster pcie lanes (which are only useful for xfire, sli) and better bios settings and what not, however, I didn't find anything that would apply to me.

Thanks for understanding,

Buy an Asus M5A99FX Pro 2.0. It's less expensive than a sabertooth and OC's the same. You need a good board to effectively supply the additional voltage needed to overclock and to keep the crucial voltage related components cool under increased stress.

How exactly does a better motherboard help overclocking? Is it just to do with temps and throttling? I am planning to overclock from 4ghz to 5/5.2ghz if i am lucky considering i will watercool.

If you want to try to OC to 5ghz then you have to get the 990 chipset MB with 8+2 power phase counts at least, like Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5. If you have to try then just keep the 990fx Sabertooth and you have better chance to oc to the highest ghz(5ghz?).
If you don't want to oc like that crazy, I recommend to get the fx8320, because the 8320 and 8350 are the same, only difference is that you pay more for the 0.5ghz.

I think you may consider to get the fx8320 and Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z for the same price. And the ASUS is best brand MB for the AMD fx cpu ocing.

keep in mund for 5ghz, you maybe only get the benchmark score for fun, you don't need that for long run, right.

I am expecting my 8350 to run at 4.5ghz for gaming and what not with 5ghz during rendering (say 4.8ghz to make it stable). As for the ROG motherboard, its simply too expensive. On scan and Overclockers, its £40 more expensive (30% more expensive than the Sabertooth) for what is pretty much the exact same thing but with a nicer colour scheme (to each their own though) and better integrated audio, neither of which bother me.

The above is simply an optimistic guess, I am most likely not going to achieve those overclocks (I would be happy with 4.7ghz stable for rendering), however, I am still unclear as to how important is a good motherboard for overclocking and more importantly, why.
