Hi
I have a WD Elements hard drive 2TB which i am having problems with. I use Windows8 and it was formatted as NTFS.
3 days ago I had to reformat and re-load Windows8 on my PC. Since then this drive is not being recognized. When I connect to the PC it recognizes an external hard drive and i can check its properties in Device Mgr (whcih says it is working perfectly). I also am able to see it in Disk Management and it says that my drive needs to be initialized. I try doing it using MBR using the initialize disk option but get an error from Virtual disk mgr " Incorrect Function"
I am also able to see it on the router Internet page as a USB drive if i connect through the router but it says "unmounted". How can I rectify this issue without formatting and losing all my data? I have also tried connecting through XBMC device (XIOS) but no success. I can safely eject from the PC and router using the Eject command. Is it possible the directory/boot structure is corrupted and if so what is the solution to this problem?

That may have caused the initial issue as USB drives are very particular and are prone to become RAW or unallocated at the slightest provocation, which is why they are not really useful for key backup, only for extra storage that is otherwise backed up to a stable location (DVDs, Carbonite online, etc.).

Don't try to initialize it again either unless you eventually get some data off and want to reformat.

Try some other USB ports and try it on another computer.

For whatever files you don't have backed up you might want to start trying data recovery programs like Recuva.

Hi, Thanks for the response. I have tried EaseUS after reading the comments earlier. It does not recognize the drive. I can see the drive in Disk Mgmt. Could this be due to my having reformatted my internal hard drive and re-loaded Windows 8?
